Ever had to let go of someone in your brokerage? Here's everything you need to know: Recently, our client encountered such a situation, prompting us to assist with best practices for handling employee terminations within the industry. As an insurance professional, our client is no stranger to the complexities of managing personnel and making tough decisions. One such decision, which often weighs heavily on managers and business owners alike, is the termination of an employee. While it's a topic many would prefer to avoid, it's essential to address it with transparency, compassion, and professionalism when it becomes necessary. The insurance industry is heavily regulated, and termination procedures must align with legal requirements and company policies. Consulting legal counsel or HR professionals to ensure compliance with employment laws and contractual obligations is crucial to mitigate risks and protect the organization's reputation. Terminating an employee can have significant personal and professional implications. Offering support in the form of career counseling, outplacement services, or access to employee assistance programs can help ease the transition and demonstrate a commitment to the individual's well-being. Minimize disruption to workflow and client service by proactively addressing staffing changes and reallocating responsibilities as needed. Communicate changes to relevant stakeholders with transparency and reassurance. Ever had a tough situation your business has had to handle? "I'm drowning and can't delegate. Our new employees don't know anything." The struggle is real to onboard and train our new(er) colleagues. Have you considered what we're asking as you drop them into your team? There's a reason this is hard. Our industry's a little extra on everything including this basic question... How "big" is the group? Note: We're not talking premium or revenue to the firm here. We're looking for a count of benefit-eligible employees. Depending on who's asking (or the data source) our new employee may hear/see: EEs FTEs Lives PTBEs Heads Eligibles Insureds Enrollees Contracts Members Doorknobs Employees Subscribers Participants Beneficiaries Belly Buttons Policyholders Plus, in some markets, we still say “I got a 100-man group”... That takes me back to my start in the business in the late 1900s. 😉 Am I missing any? Don't blame knowledge gaps on remote work or work ethic. Work as a team to provide resources and structure without overwhelm. If you're curious about how our programs can help while removing the training burden off of your existing team, ask me. Pssst. Message me if you don't understand a term and want to ask privately. Last week I explained RFP to someone in a Marketing Dept and the week prior that "PnC" was "P&C"... There are no silly questions and you may ask me something we'll figure out together! President ➤ Milestone Risk Management | Workers' Comp Strategies for Middle-Market Businesses | ExMod Management 📉 | Safety & Claims Processes that Work! | Board Member ➤ The Priority Center
How we cut premiums by 50% for this client 👇 A leading aftermarket auto part manufacturer faced a critical issue: A high Experience Modification (ExMod) rate due to poor communication between the employer and claimants. And an underutilized return-to-work program. This resulted in extended claim durations and costs. Doubling indemnity payments. And a spike in litigated claims as employees felt neglected. Here’s what we found when we ran our analysis 👇 1️⃣ HR lacked awareness of claimants' medical appointments, missing opportunities to express care and keep tabs on recovery progress, leading to prolonged and costlier claims. 2️⃣ Only half of the claimants received light/modified duty assignments, though nearly all could have been accommodated, unnecessarily inflating claim costs. 3️⃣ Poor communication and support led to an environment where employees felt uncared for, significantly increasing the likelihood of litigation. Here’s what we did for them 👇 👍We established a new standard, ensuring all claimants received a personal note from HR within two days of injury, emphasizing the company's commitment to their recovery and navigation through the workers' comp system. 👍Our on-staff claims adjuster ensured HR was informed of all doctor appointments, facilitating better communication with employees and reducing missed appointments. 👍 We developed light/modified duty job descriptions, enabling nearly all injured employees to remain at work, significantly reducing the need for indemnity payments. The outcome? ✅The time from injury to full recovery shortened, and litigated claims became rare. ✅The manufacturer's ExMod rating plummeted from 220 to 77 within three years. ✅ Annual premiums were cut from nearly $500k to under $250k.
