Imagine a world where robotic exoskeletons are no longer the stuff of science fiction but part of our everyday reality—helping humans conserve energy, assisting in activities like walking, running, and stair climbing. The future, it seems, is here. In an encouraging leap forward, a team of diligent researchers at North Carolina State University has developed an AI-powered simulation training method for robotic exoskeletons, which can adapt to assist users autonomously. This pioneering innovation erases the line between simulation and reality – and it does so without the need for lengthy human trials since the AI readily learns to assist users within the computer simulation. During the trials, the use of the exoskeleton led to significant energy conservation for the users. Participants consumed 24.3% less energy while walking, 13.1% less while running, and a striking 15.4% less while navigating stairs! Such ground-breaking development is set to expedite the creation and adoption of assistive robots that can enhance the lives of both able-bodied individuals and those with mobility impairments. This study beautifully encapsulates how artificial intelligence, robotic technology and the undying human spirit to innovate can work together to uplift humanity.
