The Green Door Initiative, led by Donele Wilkins, is a nonprofit organization in Detroit that focuses on environmental protection and workforce development in the green economy. The organization aims to empower residents to pursue careers in environmentally-focused jobs while addressing #EnvironmentalJustice in the city. Green Door Initiative has been able to train and place 1,500 individuals in green jobs with a high job placement rate and competitive wages. Recently, the city of Detroit selected Green Door to assist in the development of its solar field initiative. Additionally, Green Door's latest project "Motor City to Solar City" is designed to establish a community blueprint for solar energy utilization and sustainability, supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). I am reading the State of the Birrarung (Yarra) and its Parklands report by Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability. My first take is that it is a good report full of grim tidyings. It is five-years since the last report (that’s the legislated cycle). One quote on page 90 stuck out to me on my skimming:  ‘There has been a nearly three-fold decrease between 2019 and 2022 in the number of hours worked within the river corridor by environmental volunteers.’ That is stark and a disappointment, particularly as one of the principles of the Yarra (Birrarung) Act is community involvement: '(2) Community consultation and participation should play an essential and effective role in the protection, improvement and promotion of Yarra River land.’ p. 13. That something is not working with the way the implementation of the Yarra Strategic Plan is structured is one thought. That’s the purpose of this report to highlight where things are going wrong so they can be fixed. It is serving its legislated function.
