Public Health Career Conversations: Episode 11 – Dr Vuyiswa Kumalo "I think it's more general advice about perhaps seeking specialist training post community service. I know that sometimes there's a lot of pressure to be specializing. And you may just make a decision based on “Okay, all my peers are doing it, and my career needs to move forward. So let me just jump into it.” But I think sometimes taking the time to really think it through is really, really helpful. And that was the route I took because I knew that I would probably specialize. But at the time of graduation I didn't know what I would love. After finishing internship I enjoyed most of my placements, and after comm serv (community service) as well. So take the time because this is a very big decision that you're gonna make. You’d HOPE that one of the most important jobs in society would be moderately accessible to people from all backgrounds... You’d hope, but you’d be sooooo wrong 😒   People with parents who are Doctors are 24 times more likely to be a Doctor than those with parents who are not. T W E N T Y - F O U R  T I M E S  ❗ ❗ ❗ This makes medicine the most elite profession to get into 🤯 Becoming a Doctor is about so much more than just “hard work”. There’s a certain finesse needed to get into med school consisting of slick application technique, tailored interview prep and exclusive work experience opportunities. So much of this is accessible (or not) depending on your family/social background. Now this obviouslyyy doesn’t mean that Doctors and their impressionable kids are bad people, FAR from it! Navigating the world of career projection can be quite daunting, did I plan out my career? We can start by asking ourselves a few simple questions? Where do I see myself in the next five years? How do I exit my current position? Do I make a horizontal or lateral move? Do I retire, and what next? What if I am not able to perform my current duties due to a physical and or mental/ emotional issue? Where do I go from here? People in the caring professions are givers; we give and give and give without thinking about ourselves. Caregivers or people in the helping professions must free themselves of the worker-bee mentality. We must help ourselves to the next step in our careers. We should plan to provide service in another form by asking ourselves how we can care without sacrificing our physical, mental, or psychological well-being. There are a number of ways to do this. When I graduated with my PhD, I faced an unexpected challenge: four months of unemployment from May to August, combined with the daunting realization that the career path I envisioned seemed out of reach. Landing a job with Harris County felt like a stroke of luck, and I’m forever grateful to Ana Yáñez Correa Ph.D. and Jim Bethke for taking a chance on me! My academic resume was perfectly aligned with an Assistant Professor position (7 publications, one solo author, and 4 first authors), but translating my experience into practical, actionable insights for local government was a steep learning curve. My initial days at Harris County were overwhelming—I felt like a deer in headlights, struggling to convince elected officials and senior police officers of my value as a newly minted PhD. It soon became clear: my ideas needed to be cost-effective to make an impact. Government agencies often face "unfunded mandates," where ideas without associated funding can fall flat. If you're looking to transition out of academia, consider contacting local agencies and offering your expertise at no cost (This is helpful for us and them). It’s an opportunity to showcase your skills and make a real difference without imposing additional financial burdens on these agencies. Plus, it can lead to robust partnerships for grant opportunities that will naturally lead to publication ideas. Looking back, I wish I had proactively offered my services to local police departments or other criminal justice agencies. Helping them improve their systems at no cost or even discussing grants and other opportunities could have demonstrated the value of my advanced degree and potentially led to significant efficiencies and cost savings for the agencies involved. Practical experience often outweighs academic credentials in the real world.
