Winning is about more than 'just showing up'. "FIND YOUR GREATNESS" In September 2007, Adidas won the bid to become the official sportswear partner for the 2012 London Olympics. The deal worth $201million, restricted other sports brands like Nike from featuring Olympic athletes in their advertisements for the games. Faced with this challenge, Nike did not give up. Instead, Nike chose an unconventional path, showcasing greatness in ordinary people; such as a 200-pound 12-year old boy Nathan Sorrell, whose story encapsulated Nike's message that greatness transcends the realm of elites. I've been wanting to share my thoughts on Nike's latest "Winning Isn't for Everyone" campaign. But I didn’t want to just share an opinion this time. I wanted to show the stark contrast between a once no 1, out-of-touch brand, and an underdog who values simplicity and true consumer centricity. One is about owning "the win". The other is about owning running. Which, right now, they do. One has a big budget, the other one has big values and empathy. I guess the world is changing quickly for those who think the flex still works. This ad gives me Apple „crush it“ vibes 😅 Apple squashed creativity, Nike breaks the spirit of sport. I see a clear parallel here… But maybe I am wrong. What are the opinions out there? Tone deaf advertising by Nike. Let's lean in hard on the qualities of a winner that are the worst of us. Let's emphasize and stress those mindsets and behaviours most orthoganal to inclusivity, empathy, and kindness. I get what they were going for, but it's a bridge too far to run across before this ad is done playing. Nike can do a lot better than this. I like Nike. They do good things. They make some great shoes. Not the best across the board anymore, but that's why competition is good. The cloudmonster and related runners from ON are IMHO the best on the friggen planet. Running with these shoes is like nothing I have experienced before. You have to just try them. I still have a top shelf Nike Air pair, which are a GREAT shoe. But there is absolutely no cushion comparison. Walking on air has nothing on Walking on clouds. So IMO this is just an "ooops I did it again" moment for the marketing "genius" behind this campaign. It happens. This one isn't embarassingly bad. If you aren't paying attention you might actually think it's good. And maybe it is actually GREAT because here we are talking about Nike. Which is the point after all isn't it? For the record, I also just called Shania, and it doesn't impress her much either. So it's a wrap. “You got this” vs. “Just do it” I find it very motivating cycling past Declan Rice on my way to work in the new adidas #Euros2024 creative. The simplicity and the ambiguity of "You got this". Is Declan motivating me? Himself? Am I motivating him as I read the text in my head? I like the idea it’s mutual and we are spurring each other on. But I couldn’t help notice the similarity of these three, single syllable words to the iconic Nike slogan - “Just do it”. Both of them are highly motivating, and provoke an emotional response in the reader/listener. I think in a challenging era of covid, inflation, recessions etc. that the reassurance of “You got this” is more in tune with how I feel than the more "stop whining and get on with it" of the Nike original.
