One question we often get is how do I become a SARTECH? There are actually 3 levels of certification recognized in SAR. They are Awareness, Operational, and Technician. If you are in the fire service, these levels may sound familiar as Awareness, Operational, and Technician mirror that concept. The Non-Field Responder / Awareness Level / SARTECH IV wants to help in the incident command post/search base and won't be going out in the field- they need an awareness of SAR. The Non-Wilderness Responder / Operational Level / SARTECH III will be operating in a built up urban/suburban/rural areas with assignments such as neighborhood canvassing, posting flyers, grid searching in local parks, and treating missing persons or team members that might be injured. The Wilderness Responder / Operational Level / SARTECH II are comfortable living out of a pack for 24-hours, sitting in the dirt, dealing with all kinds of bugs, and scratching poison oak/ivy/sumac with assignments that include overnight wilderness searching, stokes litter carry outs, field interviews, grid searching in national parks, and treating missing persons or team members that might be injured until you can get them to a pre-hospital transport system. Do they come and see you, or just speak over the phone? You’re more likely to get an accurate quote if the technician comes to your premises and undertakes a visual inspection first. If they are reluctant to come and see you, and want to quote on the phone, you could get a nasty surprise when they turn up and decide the job’s going to cost more than they originally thought. This is called ‘bait and switch’. The way to protect yourself from these companies is to insist they come and see the job in person. The way that fire and water damage jobs are handled do have some similarities, but they can’t be interchanged. On fire damage jobs, confirm that only techs with at least a Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician (FSRT) certification are allowed on the site. Being Odor Control Technician (OCT) certified is also helpful. #DisasterRestoration

WHY SHOULD I ISOLATE WHEN PERFORMING MY TASK AS A TECHNICIAN?   Isolation is there to provide protection to the equipment and the personnel involved. Safety 🦺 first always. Never should you put your life in the hands of someone, don't share the keys for your personal isolation lock 🔐 with anyone.
