I try to text 💬 all clients to wish them a Happy Birthday 🥳🎂🎈 It's a small gesture, but it is something. #customerretention #lessonlearned: Recovery is the attempt to make up for a poor customer experience. If done right, the recovery action helps ensure vulnerable customers are kept and ultimately become lifelong, loyal customers dedicated to the brand. A good recovery action doesn't merely make up for the mistake, such as a refund or replacement. Rather, it goes beyond to make up for the inconvenience. For example, if something is amiss with your hotel room the front desk upgrades you to a suite. Perhaps a restaurant makes up for a mistake in your food order by providing a round of drinks and/or desserts for your table. The picture below shows my replacement hiking boots for pair that had a problem. Dick's Sporting Goods not only shipped the replacement pair, they tossed in a $25 gift card for my trouble. I recall a customer was waiting on a spare part when I worked as a planner at a global DC. This was for a component for which the backorder would take at least a week to fill. I offered them the entire assembly free of charge, including shipping, which could ship out that day. It's because I knew the value of reputation in the marketplace. Word-of-mouth is now, always has been, and always will be the most influential form of advertising, noting word-of-mouth in today's terms includes internet reviews. It is important to note that customers are much more likely to share negative experiences than positive ones.... why? Because there's no reason to brag that our meal order was correct, the flight was on time, etc. It was expected! In case you've missed it in past years, it's time again to share my 3 steps for stress free Holiday shopping. Enjoy! 1. Buy a random easy to wrap item and a gift card. Kleenex, Wheat Thins, and Cheerios are my go to picks. 2. Tape gift card to random item or hide inside for added fun. 3. Wrap random item and place under the tree. They... get all the excitement and mystery of having something to unwrap under the tree and something they actually want inside. You... get your shopping done in about 8 minutes at the local CVS. Added bonus is the clueless look when Dad unwraps a box of Wheat Thins.

Sometimes basic communication seems so, well, BASIC, that it's easily over-looked. Two weeks ago I wanted to buy my son gift cards to some of his favorite eating establishments. It was a Monday afternoon and one of them was shut-tight. Since it's not some place I frequent, I wasn't sure whether they were closed for the day, or closed for good. I moved on and purchased gift cards at other places. (Turns out, they were just closed because it was Monday.) There was no "Open Hours" sign in the window. I had no motivation to return and try my luck again. Making it easy to do business with you and your company starts with great communication. Last week I was on Beaver Island in Michigan. They have the most fabulous toy store in the whole world. I. Am. Not. Kidding. The owner, Mary Rose, is practically an institution. She hasn't aged one minute in the twenty+ years I've been a customer. It's a very seasonal business: population on the island swells in the summer and falls off exponentially at the end of August.
