The facial recognition technology (FRT) industry is expected to be worth $13.4 billion globally by 2028. As the use of AI in FRT becomes increasingly common, including for security purposes such as at major sporting events like football matches and to curb shoplifting, there is an opportunity to build the much needed trust to support its adoption. Research shows 77% of people believe trust in AI is key for facial recognition use in surveillance. To help organizations navigate these tools and build public trust, BSI has launched new guidance for the safe and ethical use of facial recognition tools. It aims to embed best practice and give guidance on the appropriate guardrails organizations can put in place to safeguard civil rights and eliminate system bias and discrimination. Artificial intelligence’s (AI) knowledge is not innate; it learns information and develops processes needed to perform its role and bring benefit. It works best when it blends human expertise with a computer that’s learning. Like a child going through education, AI can learn and gain deep domain knowledge. For instance, in the case of computer vision, AI may be able to detect manufacturing defects in a product that a human eye can’t see, but first, the AI must be taught what to look for. Out-of-the-box software may know basic processes and information, but organizations that understand how to teach AI the specifics for specialist tasks will accelerate its successful application.
