The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has given its approval to two Hydro Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs), which include the 600 MW Upper Indravati in Odisha being developed by OHPC Ltd and 2000 MW Sharavathy in Karnataka being developed by KPCL, the Union Ministry of Power announced on Friday. The approval given to Odisha government-owned OHPC and Karnataka government-owned KPCL has been fast-tracked to expedite the projects. CEA has also received a huge number of proposals for Hydro PSPs (around 60 GW), under Survey & Investigation for the preparation of DPRs (detailed project reports). All the developers are at various stages of preparation for DPR. Meeting water needs may require GWs of new capacity for 18TWhs/year. 🚰 The water-energy nexus is a ever-more prominent trend across the world, but especially across the #MiddleEast. Khashman offers an insightful overview of desalination technologies, water needs, and power demand. "When it comes to power capacity additions, around 1400 MW of new power plants would be needed to cover the emerging demand of the desalination sector by 2028 with peak additions in 2025, and 2026 [in GCC states]... Most likely these will be regarded also as increases in the peak load requirements in the reported countries as the power demand of SWRO is largely inflexible and would occur with high likelihood in periods of peak demand. IRADe, in collaboration with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), co-organised a two-day Capacity Building Workshop for the Northern Region Stakeholders on "Resilient, Inclusive, and Environmentally Sustainable Power Sector." The workshop aimed to enhance understanding of electricity laws, guidelines, policies, rules, regulations, technologies, and practices among key stakeholders in the Northern Region. 📅 2-3 July 2024 📍 Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Key highlights: 🔹 Prof. Jyoti Parikh, Executive Director of IRADe, emphasised the collaborative effort between CEA and IRADe as a significant step towards a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable power sector. 🔹 Mr. Pankaj Batra, Senior Advisor at IRADe, highlighted the importance of this initiative in refreshing and deepening the expertise of state stakeholders in technical, legal, and regulatory aspects of the power sector. 🔹 Prof. Kirit Parikh, Chairman of IRADe, emphasised that empowering state stakeholders with the right knowledge and skills is essential for navigating the evolving energy governance landscape. 🔹 Shri Ashish Kumar Goel (IAS), Chairman, UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), Ministry of Energy, Government of Uttar Pradesh, stated that in Uttar Pradesh, there has been a growth of electricity to the extent of over 10% in June 2024, as compared to the same period in 2023. The state would gear up to meet the demand. 🔹 Shri Arvind Kumar, Chairperson of UP Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC), highlighted that intermittent renewables are increasingly constituting a large portion of the generation capacity mix, emphasising the need for flexible thermal power plants and energy storage. Uttar Pradesh has signed MOUs for closed-loop pumped hydro storage up to 18,000 MW. 🔹 Shri GHANSHYAM PRASAD, Chairperson of CEA, stated that grid operation is critical in the power market, offering numerous opportunities for resource adequacy across transmission, generation, and distribution. GHANSHYAM PRASAD "We have included Resource Adequacy, in generation, transmission and distribution, as an important aspect to be ensured by the States, looking at 10 years ahead period, as commissioning periods of different power plants are different for different types of power plants, ranging up to over 10 years for a hydropower plant. Guidelines have already been issued by CEA in this regard. 🇮🇳THDC India has signed a pact with the Maharashtra government for harnessing six PSPs totalling 6,790 MW with an investment of over Rs 33,600 crore. 🚀The agreement aims to facilitate the developer in conducting surveys, investigations, preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), and establishing projects in a time-bound manner. 🎯The six planned projects are: 1️⃣Malshej Ghat Pumped Storage Project (700 MW) 2️⃣Aruna Pumped Storage Project (1,950 MW) 3️⃣Kharari Pumped Storage Project (1,250 MW) 4️⃣Humbarli Birmani Pumped Storage Project (1,000 MW) 5️⃣Aruna Kolamb Pumped Storage Project (1,200 MW) 6️⃣Morawadi Majarewadi Pumped Storage Project (690 MW). 🔋India is accelerating it's energy transition and PSP will play a crucial role in this providing more reliable power in peak time and will also help in reducing curtailment or RE in solar hours. #India #future #energy #transition #maharashtra #thdc #hydro #renewable #pumpstorage https://lnkd.in/deKJNBRx
