#SCALE-UP (increasing the production volume of a process within an existing facility by enhancing the capacity of individual equipment) and #SCALE-OUT (increasing the production capacity by duplicating the manufacturing process through parallel expansion) are two distinct strategies in #GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) manufacturing that we can employ when expanding the production capacity. While scale-up focuses on maximizing production within the existing process, scale-out emphasizes duplicating the process to increase overall manufacturing capacity. Both strategies have their advantages and challenges, and the choice depends on factors such as production requirements, resource availability, and long-term growth strategies in #GMP manufacturing.

Today is World Metrology Day! Metrology means the scientific study of measurement. In my 5+ years at LGC, I’ve been continually surprised at how measurements, which we take for granted, affect everything in our daily lives, from the food we eat, to life-changing medicines. UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML) at LGC delivers measurement research, and are world leaders in chemical and biological measurement, offering reference materials, calibration facilities and services as well as specialised advice and training. They play a leading role internationally to standardise measurements across the world, helping to foster innovation, promoting productivity and economic growth. This year’s theme for World Metrology Day is sustainability, and looks to celebrate and recognise the numerous measurement opportunities that contribute to the establishment of a sustainable global economy and environment. The Center of Excellence for Alternatives Assessment is developing a pilot alternatives assessment roadmap for the use of N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in various applications in semiconductor manufacturing. This is the first step in the process of creating a more detailed Alternatives Assessment roadmap that will support chemical users and suppliers by identifying, screening, and evaluating potential alternatives for NMP. The Center is seeking private and public partners to support and participate in the NMP roadmap project, starting in September 2024. ERDCWERX, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and TechLink, recently hosted the Innovation 2 Market Patent Showcase in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The event allowed businesses and investors to learn about opportunities for introducing ERDC innovations to government and commercial markets. Dr. David Horner, director of the ERDC Information Technology Laboratory, signed non-exclusive license agreements with AxNano for the PFAS Effluent Treatment System, and Surtreat for the Electro-Osmotic Pulse Treatment Method. These agreements allow the businesses to make and sell technologies developed and patented by engineers and scientists at ERDC. Excellent technical presentations at this year's 2024 IPC APEX. The evidence presented, most innovation is outside the US; this is concerning. Evidence further supported that Cu to Cu interfaces, the weak microvia interface somewhere between lytic Cu-fill and the target pad, continues to plague our industry. We continue to learn, yet have not identified the processes or process variables to help the process engineers avoid the hidden reliability threat. Conferences mark milestones. We cannot wait until the next conference to learn a little more. We have to move faster and show manufacturing progress, even if measurably incremental, because the US PWB supply base does not have the luxury of cost-competitiveness to wait until the problem is solved.
