🌟 I’ve been learning more about the transition challenges faced by young adults aging out of the foster care system, especially after my own experience with fostering to adopt a child at risk of aging out. One promising solution I heard about is intergenerational housing. This approach offers stable housing and a supportive community that can greatly ease the transition to independence. Older adults in these settings can provide mentorship, life skills training, and emotional support—essential tools for young adults facing the uncertainty of adulthood. Moreover, intergenerational housing fosters a sense of belonging and reduces isolation, while also offering valuable networking opportunities and access to crucial resources. As innovative ways to support those aging out of foster care are explored, intergenerational housing holds great potential to make a meaningful impact. During the month of May, Friends of the Children - Eastern Idaho joins our national network in recognizing two nationwide campaigns: National Mental Health Awareness Month and National Foster Care Month. We believe in the power of paid, professional mentoring to improve the mental, emotional, and behavioral health of youth facing great obstacles. We prioritize working with children who are at higher risk of mental health challenges and equip our Friends with the tools they need to build the kind of safe, supportive environments that all children deserve. Our professional mentoring model's success in foster care is evident in its proven outcomes, from preventing entry into foster care, to shortening lengths of stays and reducing foster care re-entry rates. By 2030, we believe Friends of the Children can reduce the number of 5-year-olds entering foster care by 10%. In my experience when working in child welfare, the main challenge is that mental health providers working with families have limited resources and end up doing more case management than actual interventions to focus in mental health. The caseloads are high we handle crisis after crisis from food insecurity, homelessness, medical access, and much more, Implementing evidence based models are critical for providers to maintain focus on the mental health needs and not our burnout.

Kansas foster kids get too little behavioral and mental health treatment, audits find, but expanding those services can prove so costly that it slows expansion of those programs. Foster kids got mental and behavioral health treatment just 70% of the time in 2022, a lawsuit settlement found. That’s well below the 85% court-mandated requirement. The lawsuit was from groups trying to reform the state’s foster care system in hopes of improving outcomes for kids. And it’s the second year in a row the audit found that the state failed to help enough kids. One foster child took his own life in October. Mental health care remains in short supply for all children. But foster agencies deal with kids with higher rates of mental health problems. Reading this was calming to my nervous system. While the memo is written from the perspective of a young child who is in foster care and is about to start school, there are many trauma-informed strategies named in the memo to support the little one that can be of value for us as adults in the workplace. Each youth in foster care has unique needs and challenges. Tailoring support can address specific issues and enhance academic success. This is the reason I provide an individual needs assessment for each youth with behavioral challenges. Why? Because all behavior is communication and you cannot help a student if you do not know what they need individually.
