Professor Emeritus, Princeton University/ Co-Founder, Optimal Dynamics/ Executive-in-Residence Rutgers Business School
Karmel S. Shehadeh posted her recent paper on "Stochastic Optimization Approaches for an Operating Room and Anesthesiologist Scheduling Problem" (to appear in Operations Research). This is a classic example of the approach used in the stochastic programming community where they use a stochastic lookahead policy (which is fine), but lose sight of the fact that the goal is to search for the best (according to whatever criteria apply) policy that works well over time. Virtually all stochastic lookahead policies (and it is certainly the case here) are approximations of the real problem, which means that an optimal solution is *not* an optimal policy. I don't mind how the problem is being solved, but I really urge people to properly formulate the objective function. That is why I had an entire series of LinkedIn posts on the topic of objective functions. You can view the posts at https://lnkd.in/e3q4r-wJ A proper objective function should state how a policy is being evaluated, and at least state the aspirational goal of searching for the best policy. It would be nice if papers would at least mention the four classes of policies, and then describe why they chose to focus on whatever class they settled on.

I love this picture. Taken before Buoyant was a fully formed idea, it represents to me exactly what we’re doing: taking a tangled mess and not removing it, but transforming it into something that protects rather than blocks your path. Today, your connection to your doctors is so controlled by a system of insurmountable barriers that simple problems may take months to fix, and what used to be a two-minute phone call has become hours of waiting in an urgent care. With Buoyant, you will have access not only to the specialty expertise of every Buoyant team member, but also to every specialty that we can access via our network, from cardiology to dermatology. There will be no gatekeeper, pre-approval, or anything other than you having a question and your phone. Your Buoyant membership will give you direct, personal access to our entire team and extended specialty network to answer any medical question you may have. It’s really that simple. If you need a doctor, you talk to a doctor. If you need labs or imaging, we order them for you. If you need a specialist, we consult one for you. Even if you need to move outside of our team to see a specialist in person, we coordinate everything. And because reclaiming control of your health and your life means more than just putting out life’s fires, Buoyant also has the tools to help you be proactive about your health in ways you probably never thought possible. This isn’t research – it’s proven science that just isn’t mainstream…yet. Website, pricing, and an exciting announcement are planned for release next week. Thank you so much for following our progress. Adam Friedlander, MD Founder & CEO #Buoyant #LetsFixMedicine #WatchThisSpace

Treatment Planning Coordinator: 6 Step Process 🚪 Step 6: The Exit 🌟 As our patients accept treatment, their journey doesn't end there - it's just beginning! Here's how we ensure a smooth exit strategy at GnA Consult: 👀 Observing Engagement: Even after accepting treatment, patients are still watching and evaluating every detail. 📅 Pre-set Follow-ups: Did you know? 88% of patients without a pre-set follow-up for the next step don't move forward with treatment. 👋 Personal Farewell: We mention their name, express gratitude for their time, schedule their next visit, and personally lead them to the exit. (DON'T RUSH THIS!) 🤝 Consistent Contact: For all recurring appointments, maintaining the same point of contact is crucial until surgery or treatment completion. 😊 Familiar Faces: Patients feel more comfortable when they hear and see familiar faces, especially when making significant decisions.
