The industry called, and DTU answered. On September 2, a new Diploma is introduced. What makes large ships seaworthy? How are ocean waves used for energy? Additionally, how do logistics go green? All are answered in DTU's Diploma in Maritime Engineering. Mechanical engineering expertise is applied to the maritime industry in this academic field. Graduates are qualified to work with marine products and production. Due to the marine environment and swell regulations, developing sea-friendly solutions requires specialized expertise. The new Diploma in Danish Maritime Engineering major explores the ocean's limitless potential and helps solve these critical issues. What do students learn? Maritim Teknik teaches mechanical engineering and maritime industry basics. Knowledge of construction, production technology, materials theory, mathematics, mechanics, and dynamics is required. One also learns to integrate it with ocean expertise. Ship design and dimensional stability, marine energy use, and environmentally friendly maritime traffic improvement strategies are learned here. Construction, product development, and mechanics must be taken early on, along with marine environment courses. In the fourth semester, most required courses end, allowing students to focus on maritime interests like wave energy system design or shipbuilding materials. The fifth-semester internship provides more engineering knowledge. Finalize this academic journey with a diploma engineering project, ideally with an organization. Maritime mechanical engineers have many job options. Consider engineering consultancies like COWI, in shipping industry optimization, as in Maersk, or in Ørsted for offshore wind farm planning. The maritime industry is eager for engineers. Diplomas in Maritime Engineering open doors to these fascinating fields.

MEET THE INTERNS! Name: Rhona Kakande   Role: Student Civil and Structural Engineer   Department: Civil and Structural Engineering   College Degree: Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Civil Engineering at Munster Technological University.   Hobbies: Travelling, Socialising with friends, and Pilates.   Favourite project and why? My favourite project has been the Aghadoe Distillery in Killarney. With the support of an experienced team of civil and structural engineers here at MWP, I assisted with drainage calculations to assess storm water runoff volume, size pipes and an attenuation tank, and performing the preliminary inspection plans for the distillery's still, coach, and maturation buildings. Through this project, I was able to apply some of the knowledge I had learned in school to an actual job and get insight into the requirements and stages involved in this particular project by completing the preliminary inspection plans. Experience gained so far: During my time here, I have been introduced to a variety of software programmes, including Tekla Tedds and Info drainage, which have greatly simplified the design process in comparison to my time at college. With these I have learned how to design storm water and foul water networks, structural members like beams, foundations, and timber in buildings. Additionally, I have had the chance to shadow experienced engineers, which has been a helpful learning experience. Most challenging and rewarding experience of your role: The most challenging aspect of my role is being given a task and not knowing where to begin. However, the most rewarding aspect is the guidance and assistance provided by the excellent team of engineers to see the assignment through to completion and as a result, I have been able to learn new skills and work on some incredible projects that I never would have imagined taking on. Aims for the next few years: My future plans include finishing my degree at MTU, participating in a graduate programme for one or two years to gather experience and get an idea of what field of civil engineering I would like to specialise in and then returning to college to pursue a master's degree in that. #mwp #engineering #consultancy #interns #mtu

To continue celebrating National Engineers Week… Today, we’re highlighting one of NOTU’s facility’s engineers Ryan S. from St. Louis, Missouri. Ryan’s motto is, “If it’s not broken, take it apart and fix it.” That makes a lot of sense when take into consideration that Ryan, who is NOTU’s crane program manager and certifying official, is a mechanic engineer; which, going back to the Oxford English Dictionary, is literally the branch of engineering concerned with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of machines and mechanical implements. He said his interest in engineering grew out of spending time in parent’s garage fixing old lawn mowers. “I excelled in both math and science in school,” he adds. “Originally, I wanted to work for a car manufacturer after college,” he adds, “but that didn’t quite work out. “I also took an architecture class once,” he says, thinking that perhaps designing structures might be in his future, but “that bored me to death, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to do that for very long.” So, after completing bachelors in mechanical engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology, Ryan took on several opportunities before landing here at Cape Canaveral. Ryan was an internal with Manufacturing and Duke Manufacturing St. Louis; and a project engineer with United States Gypsum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before moving on to Walworth, Wisconsin, to be a maintenance manager for United States Gypsum. Engineering is not a pin-point focused career path. There are many different aspects to it. Ryan recommends for those considering engineering as a career path, “go to school for a general engineering degree, like mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering,” he says. “Try to get several different internships in different industries to figure out what you like best,” he adds. “With all of the different positions out there you might find something else you really enjoy even though you started out in engineering in a different pursuit. From there you can get additional education or take more specific courses to get more specified in engineering. “For me, I like anything that will keep me out of meetings,” he says. “I don’t like meetings.”

Begin somewhere and begin with something. Find an entrance into the engineering market. I was really confused on where to begin as a structural engineer. Should I go and camp on site and just master site work. Maybe I should master structural analysis first before I go out on site. Or maybe Learn engineering detailing then find an internship. At times to be honest you will feel inadequate because you don't have all this skills. Find one of them and master them. You don't have to know all of them. Then grow into the other skills. I find most engineering graduates looking to present themselves as the perfect Engineers. This quest for perfection might frustrate.This is the bottom line. Gather knowledge and keep on making valuable connections. Acquire skills that can benifit you in both employment or out of employment. Do you learn something new every day? Yesterday I spent some time at University of North Florida interacting with students from the College of Engineering. Now, I have not spent a lot of times with engineers outside of the tech space, so there was a lot to take in. Turns out there is a big difference between industrial, civil, mechanical, and chemical engineers. News to me! We are actively pursuing Industrial Engineers with SEG in a Mid, Junior, and Intern level. I saw engineering on the networking event and thought "BINGO". Turns out I was wrong. But guess what? Attending a networking event for engineering students might have been more beneficial for me than it was for the students. 🌟 Delighted to share a groundbreaking achievement from my internship at DTnEC, a cutting-edge startup in Manchester, UK, where we spearheaded the development of an innovative automated pipeline design system! 🚀 👨🔬 As a 4th-year Mechanical Engineering student at NUST, I led a dynamic team in pioneering a comprehensive solution to automate the pipeline design process for the Oil and Gas industry. Over seven intensive months, our focus was on integrating advanced technical functionalities to streamline every aspect of pipeline design. 💼 🛠️ Powered by our collective ingenuity, our system seamlessly automated intricate tasks within an Excel environment using VBA, eliminating the need for specialized software. Here's a glimpse into the technical marvels we accomplished: 🗺️ Routing with QGIS: Leveraging QGIS, we extracted vital data from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of London, including elevation, length, soil information, and key crossings. 💧 Flow Assurance: We engineered the system to calculate precise pipeline thickness based on user inputs like flow rate and pressure drop. For liquids, we employed Darcy-Weisbach and Bernoulli equations, adapting to various flow regimes. Gas calculations involved determining compressibility factors using Brills and Baggs empirical relation, followed by diameter calculations using Weymouth and Panhandle A equations. 🔩 Mechanical Design: Our system utilized ASME B36.10 standards to select appropriate pipe specifications. We employed hoop stress formulas to determine the optimal pipe NPS and schedule number. 💰 Cost Estimation: Our model factored in various parameters, including material costs and construction complexities, to provide clients with accurate projections tailored to their needs. 👥 Collaborating with talents like Usman Shah, Aiman Masood and Saram Shiraz was a true privilege, showcasing the power of interdisciplinary teamwork in tackling complex engineering challenges. Special thanks to Azam Shafiq for his unwavering support and guidance throughout this remarkable journey! 💡 This immersive experience not only sharpened our technical acumen but also underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving meaningful change. 🌐 🏆 Proud to be part of a select team that successfully delivered a project, standing out among 100 initial participants.
