To commemorate AAPI Heritage Month (Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month), DEP colleagues gathered on May 23 to observe the agency’s yearly celebration. The keynote address was delivered by Sundeep Iyer, Director of the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights, who shared his thoughts on what being a part of the AAPI community means to him and how it has shaped his career path. He later took questions from the audience of DEP colleagues, who asked about enforcement strategies, discrimination and public accountability. To complete the celebration, attendees also enjoyed a sampling of AAPI dishes! The event was organized by DEP’s Association for the Advancement of Asian Americans (4A) employee resource group and the DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) team. #aapi #aapiheritagemonth

🏳️🌈 Today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, OutVote reaffirms our solidarity with all LGBTQIA+ people. 🏳️⚧️ 🌈 LGBTQIA+ voices hold immense power to turn the tide of elections and foster a more inclusive democracy. That’s why this year's theme, "No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all," resonates deeply as we strive for a world where every individual is empowered to vote and be civically engaged. In a year with a record number of anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation passed on the state level, tackling the intersectional problems of homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia has never been more important. This is a great webinar to be introduced by the Law Society. Ramadan, although spiritually rewarding, can be very difficult especially when you're trying to keep up with your colleagues and clients but with often a lot less sleep and zero brain food for an entire month. Subtle changes to help those fasting during Ramadan in the work place is always welcomed such as a later start, flexible working during Ramadan and of course, making those aware in the workplace what Ramadan is and how best ti support colleagues during that month.
Upcoming webinar alert! Please do join our free 'share and learn’ lunchtime event on 7 March at 12.30pm to raise awareness and promote a better understanding of the Muslim festival of Ramadan. The event is designed for all solicitors, at all levels within an organisation and aims to provide the knowledge needed to contribute to the creation of an inclusive work environment. Led by Naeema Yaqoob Sajid, of Diversity+, we will be inviting contributions from those attending to further promote the spirit of inclusion and experience sharing.

As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, let's take a moment to appreciate the rich diversity and resilience of the AAPI community. Did you know that the term "Asian American" was coined by student activists in 1968 to advocate for greater representation and recognition? The AAPI community encompasses over 50 ethnic groups speaking over 100 languages, each with their unique cultures and traditions. While we celebrate the achievements and contributions of the AAPI community, it's also important to recognize the challenges they continue to face, such as discrimination, hate crimes, and the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes. Some AAPI individuals also lack access to traditional banking services, leaving them financially underserved. But here at Waya, we embrace everyone and their diverse backgrounds, ensuring one has a checking account to accommodate their daily needs and grow their financial future. We believe in fostering financial inclusion for all communities. Let's use this month as an opportunity to learn, understand, and amplify the voices of our AAPI neighbors, colleagues, and friends. #AAPIHeritageMonth #Representation #Diversity #Inclusion #FinancialInclusion

Professional Board Member on the Parole Board Queensland | National Chairperson at Pride in Law - Australia’s National LGBTIQA+ Law Association
PRIDE MONTH - As you may be aware, June is pride month, a time to reflect on how far we’ve come as a community and celebrate those achievements. It is also a time to recognise the trauma the LGBTIQA+ community have suffered and the suffering that continues to occur around the world due to offensive laws. Over the past 7 years, while leading Australia’s National LGBTIQA+ Law Association, I have met some incredible people that prove we are a resilient community. Thank you for sharing your stories with me. We’ve come a long way in Australia, but laws continue to harm the LGBTIQA+ community, including our youth in educational institutions. We can and must do better. This pride month, 🏳️🌈 I encourage you to think about the history of the pride movement; its impact and future. 🏳️⚧️ I encourage you to reach out to your LGBTIQA+ colleagues and show your support; join organisations such as Pride in Law. 🏳️🌈 I encourage you to educate yourself on the many issues that impact the LGBTIQA+ around the world, including how the death penalty continues to be applied against the LGBTIQA+ community. 🏳️⚧️ I encourage you to show your solidarity and stand up for diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Pride is not about who you are. It is about what you represent. Equality, respect and acceptance of others (including yourself). #pride #pridemonth

As we close out AAPI Heritage Month, continue to reflect on the unique experiences and contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Here are three key takeaways for embracing and honoring this vibrant community from #ConstructionInclusionWeek: 1) Understand the History: The AAPI community has a rich history filled with both triumphs and challenges. From the contributions of Chinese laborers in building the transcontinental railroad to the resilience shown during the Japanese American internment, understanding this history is essential. It allows us to appreciate the perseverance and strength that define the AAPI experience. 2) Amplify Voices: AAPI voices have historically been underrepresented in many sectors, including #construction. Actively seek out and amplify these voices by creating platforms for AAPI professionals to share their stories and expertise. This not only enriches the #constructionindustry but also ensures that diverse perspectives are integrated into our work. 3) Combat Stereotypes and Bias: The AAPI community often faces harmful stereotypes and biases that can impact their professional and personal lives. Commit to challenging these misconceptions through education and open dialogue. Encourage exposure, address unconscious bias, and promote cultural competency within your organization. #AAPIHeritageMonth Let's move beyond surface-level diversity initiatives and foster a genuinely inclusive environment.
