As of 2024, approximately 44 million people in the United States face food insecurity, including around 13 million children (Feeding America, 2023). Food insecurity disproportionately affects certain demographics, such as households with children, single mothers, and people of color. Black and Latino individuals are significantly more likely to experience food insecurity compared to their White counterparts (Feeding America, 2023; Food Research & Action Center, 2023). These figures underscore the ongoing challenges in addressing hunger in the U.S., despite economic improvements and lower unemployment rates. High living costs, including housing and healthcare, contribute to this persistent issue, often forcing families to choose between food and other essential expenses (Feeding America, 2023). Let’s fight the hunger together! Join CWS CROP Hunger Walk in your local community.

Seniors and older adults who have a grandchild in the household experience food insecurity at higher rates than those without that caretaker duty. In 2022, food insecurity was 2.2 times as high for seniors residing with a grandchild (18.1% vs. 8.3%) and 2.3 times as high for older adults residing with a grandchild (25.6% vs. 11.3%). In households with limited economic resources, children are often shielded from food insecurity by their caregivers. Seniors and older adults may ensure the food security of their grandchildren at the expense of their own dietary needs as they deal with the stress of caregiving responsibilities and stretch already-limited financial resources.
Feeding America just released its most recent data analyzing food insecurity among seniors (adults aged 60 and older) and older adults (aged 50-59) both nationally and on a state level. For the United States as a whole, food insecurity rose substantially. For Kansas and Missouri, the numbers were mixed. Read on to see the results: https://ow.ly/oKXW50SQt4Q

For the first time in a decade, hunger is on the rise, and children are impacted most of all. According to a new report by the United States Department of Agriculture, the number of children who live in food-insecure households jumped by nearly half last year. "There are now 13 million children–that’s one in five American children–who may go to bed hungry tonight," Once Upon A Farm founder Jennifer Garner and Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya write in a new commentary piece. "As the parents of young children, and as the respective founders of two food brands that share a similar mission of making better food available to all, we need your help to say: This cannot and must not happen." Parents are important school food stakeholders! Have you talked to your child about school meals? And not just what is offered but lunch time - the space, the people who nourish our children at schools (cafeteria workers, teachers, their peers). Meal time is such an important social and educational time during their school day! The school foodscape and commensality, eating with others, are opportunities to nourish community and the democratic potential of education. https://lnkd.in/ene9sPcg

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, dads spend an average of 1.42 hours per day on household activities such as food preparation and cleanup/lawn and garden care. That number increases to 1.49 hours if the youngest child in the home is under 6 (my cohort). Happy Father’s Day to all dads, what a blessing it is to have the opportunity to raise small humans. Also, investing and parenting are quite similar: - patience is required - humor and humility are needed - theory and reality often do not match - in the short-term, markets and children have a mind of their own - adhering to a set of core principles and keeping a long-term mindset often provides the best outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gb_WJkEp *Photo from my 4-year old son’s 2024 Father’s Day gift.
