In this episode of New York Next, we are in Long Island City at the office of multibillion dollar company Open Trons. They make robots for scientists. They've already saved taxpayers millions doing COVID testing. They've already gotten a check from Bill Gates, and they are well on their way to making pharmaceuticals a hundredfold cheaper. Let's go check it out. Open trans robots automate workflows for some of today's leading health and tech companies. The software allows scientists to program the machine to conduct any test or exam a lab may need. One of the big kind of challenges for scientists using robotics is how do you program the robot to make it do what you want and you need to know how to program software we really focused on making the easiest to use experience and so that's why we've. Invested heavily to incorporate AI and particularly L technologies like ChatGPT to greatly simplify programming the robot. As an example, you can use the Flex robot to do NGS library prep. And so that's a key activity involved with sequencing of DNA, next generation sequencing. NGS is a technology for determining the sequence of DNA to study genetic variation associated with diseases. Could you go on to like Chachi Peter AI and you can enter whatever test it is that you want? Yes, you could definitely use those types of tools to help program the robot to run. This type of complex process that might take 8 hours or more of many, many detailed steps I see. And then it's as simple as just hitting go and it's off to its races. And what's really great is, is this allows scientists to free up their time to do higher value activities. The value of your PhD is not to be doing a lot of manual activities all day long. It's to be using their their brain. We understand you saved in your taxpayer somebody which we love to hear during COVID. We all were a bit kind of frustrated by the lack of timely and affordable COVID testing. And so using about 40 of our robots, we set up a COVID lab actually right here where we provide the majority of all COVID testing for the city of New York, testing over 15,000,000 people and bringing down the cost of that testing more than 80% relative to other options, saving everybody in New York and taxpayers in general billions of dollars. So tell me about Bill Gates is an investor. You said you get a little bit of. Time with me chair, how does that go his principal interest really is around how it can be building a platform and ecosystem not just an individual robot but actually a platform that can transform how lab work is done enabling third party developers like other startups, scientists to build new applications for our robot build new devices, hardware devices that can integrate in with our platform and that can be a really powerful means to leverage the entire. Community to be automating the entire lab. You also have made this to be a much cheaper machine than really anything else, because this is, yeah, $7000. Many competitive solutions to our robot start at $100,000 or Milan. It's our view that these types of solutions should be accessible to scientists all around the world. And you can actually run our robot off of a car battery. And so it actually was an instance right out in the field in Africa, someone took a couple of our robots put in the back of a pickup truck. Drove out to where there was a disease outbreak to run some testing. There's a lot of these kind of amazing things that start opening up when you make automation easy to use and highly affordable. I want to get to some of the the business side of this because a lot of pharmaceutical companies, and I mean it's a trillion dollar industry. What is the business motive? What is the profit motive there? How does that work? When you look at a pharma company, their profit maximizing like any other business. So I'll use the example of gene therapies. These are really remarkable treatments on the market that cost $1,000,000 or more. If you can reduce that to $20,000 or $2000. Now that starts fundamentally changing the dynamic, where instead you could set a more affordable price and therefore make that treatment broadly accessible to everyone around the world.
