🗣 Brown vs. Board Ruling = 40 Thousand Voices Silenced. In the aftermath of the Brown vs. Board decision, a deliberate effort was made to displace Black educators from their roles, leaving approximately 40 thousand being affected within the first decade. Not to mention, reclaiming our space as Black educators, especially in leadership, has been no small feat, but we have been fighting this upward battle with pride. 💡 Why? Because when our students see themselves mirrored in their teachers, they feel valued and empowered to thrive. WE are responsible for paving the way for a generation that perceives equity and equality as a natural and integral aspect of their educational experience. 👉🏾 One Solution…Mentorship and professional development programs catered to retaining and advancing Black educators in leadership positions within the education system! The celebration of Black History month presents an opportunity to pay tribute to the profound legacy of people of the African diaspora. It is a reminder that our multifaceted history holds deep value and significance in shaping where we are today and where we are headed in the future. Engaging in impactful conversations, visiting immersive cultural displays or thought-provoking performances that highlight the resilience, ingenuity and vast contributions of the black community throughout time serves as a powerful reminder that we must continue to work towards a more inclusive society. In 2018, I set out on a quest to identify 277 out of 21,356 Black headteachers in the UK, fueled by a desire for representation and a connection to Black trailblazers in education https://lnkd.in/ekAkk4Vw (new list pending). Fast forward to a recent half term, where I was introduced to the transformative book, “Letter to a Young Generation.” Authored by the inspiring Amanda Wilson, this literary work breathed new life into my purpose, urging Black future leaders to embrace boldness and courage on their journey towards headship. The importance of representation is further emphasised in the context of a low number of Black teachers advancing to middle and senior leadership roles in the UK. This book features letters from Black headteachers across the UK, sharing advice for the next generation. Her departure, stemming from tensions with pro-Israeli donors, underscores the challenges leaders face in navigating diverse perspectives and the influence of financial interests on institutional decisions. As individuals part of higher education, this situation prompts us to consider the broader implications of such conflicts, emphasizing the need to critically examine the intersection of institutional leadership, donor influence, and the pursuit of justice. It serves as a call for educators to advocate for an inclusive environment where principled leadership can flourish without compromising core values. So, Iona University, where is your voice? 🌟 Reflecting on my journey since the Halifax Chamber awards video in 2023, where I didn't win for two consecutive years, I've come to realize there was a bigger purpose for me beyond those accolades. The growth and transformation I've experienced since then have been truly remarkable. It's astonishing how much we can evolve in such a short time frame. I've become more discerning, understanding who truly supports me and uncovering those who may not have had my best interests at heart. This newfound wisdom has been invaluable in navigating both personal and professional relationships. Speaking of professional growth, I've exceeded my own expectations, achieving milestones that once seemed out of reach. My businesses are thriving, and BWIE, the cornerstone of my professional journey, is approaching its fourth anniversary. The impact it has had on the lives of over 120 Black women directly through our 16 week start up program, and countless others indirectly, fills me with immense pride and gratitude. The flourishing of numerous Black businesses since the inception of BWIE is nothing short of inspiring. It reinforces my belief in the power of leadership and community. True leadership, I've come to understand, lies in creating opportunities for others to succeed. As we continue to push boundaries and challenge stereotypes, I am reminded of the importance of embracing growth and empowering others. Black representation in executive and leadership roles within the technology industry remains disappointingly low. A study by the Ascend Foundation found that ONLY 3.1% of executive or senior-level positions in Silicon Valley are held by Black individuals.
