I’m not sure that is the right question. The real question is WHY was there a natural gas conservation request last week? A word on coal power generation. Coal is not popular going forward right now. The James River Power Station steam turbines are permanently retired and partially demolished. John Twitty Energy Center SWPS 1 is probably online and SWPS 2 is on an extended outage since Fall of 2023 for reasons that are unclear. The Brookline substation can support an electric load greater than JRPS as long as there are no constraints on the 345 kv power line it uses. The 6 gas turbines in the CU fleet use a lot of gas and are curtailed in order to maintain nominal gas line pressure so that the furnaces. CU also has a Peak Shaving facility to help sustain gas line pressure. More pipeline capacity (new pipeline) would make a difference on line pressure. That would support both more gas turbine generators and reduce/eliminate the need for gas conservation requests. More pipelines are not cheap or easy to permit and construct.
