Once ostracized for having sickle cell, Lea Kilenga has made it her life’s mission to raise awareness about the disease and advocate for other sickle cell patients to have access to quality, affordable health care. Since 2017, her nonprofit, Africa Sickle Cell Organization, has helped more than 500,000 people in a region that has the world’s highest rates of sickle cell disease. Possibly our most ambitious campaign yet....and most dramatic video. During Lea 🌈 Turner's visit, we were invited to Chisinau's children's hospital, guests of the tuberculosis ward. Now, tuberculosis is a condition that affects the poorest communities and thrives in damp, confined conditions, and without proper medical care, is fatal. It's estimated, that more than 1,700 suffer from the condition in Moldova, representing a massive 68 per 100,000 people, compared to <7 across developed nations. Those at greatest risk are the young and the elderly, and in this hospital alone, we encountered 45 children from babies to 16 year olds. Whilst we tackle the root causes of why this condition is so prevalent in Moldova, we've been invited by the incredible medical team to help support their efforts to support the children under their care. First is the hospitals playground, which is currently dangerous and off-limits - play is a crucial part of recovery and so they've turned to Hope4❤️ to see if we can renovate and replace the condemned equipment. Second is the hospitals classroom - the table and chairs are in a state of disrepair, and simply need replacing, along with it's antique chalk-board. Yesterday, the CDC released their Vital Signs report highlighting both new 2022 congenital syphilis case counts and that nearly 90% of them were preventable. The continued rise in congenital syphilis is devastating and should trigger a massive response -- which is what NCSD is calling for from the Biden Administration. NCSD is calling on the Administration for: 1) $1 Billion to fully restore the DIS workforce funds that were rescinded earlier this year ($400M) and to fund a major first step in implementing the STI National Strategic Plan ($600M). 2) Immediate removal of administrative barriers to encourage the use of existing funding streams to focus on and contribute to an HHS-wide response to this crisis. 3) Name a White House Syphilis Response Coordinator, building on the lessons learned from last year's mpox response and designating a specific leader to coordinate government-wide efforts. As difficult as this data is to see, we are not surprised. We have warned about this for years. We will continue advocating our communities, and for the urgent syphilis response the nation needs. The importance of outdoor play in combating and reducing tuberculosis in children.   Without doubt medical interventions and preventive measures are crucial in the fight against #tuberculosis in children, but the importance of outdoor play should not be underestimated. In this video you can see the current situation at one pediatric hospital in Chisinau, Moldova.   Eugene Mattern each of your videos arouses strong emotions, which stimulates and confirms that the Hope4❤️ team Chris ❤️ Lomas, Zoe Lomas, Elena Prysiazhniuk, Ivan Ivancev and dear Lea 🌈 Turner can make a difference.   By encouraging children to spend more time outdoors, we can strengthen their immune system, increase their vitamin D levels, improve their physical condition, reduce stress levels, encourage social interaction and expose them to beneficial bacteria. Involvement in outdoor play complements existing preventive measures and serves as a holistic approach to combat tuberculosis and promote the overall health and well-being of children.   But these 45 children affected by tuberculosis from babies to 16 year old do not have access to the playground because it is damaged.
