Novel and exciting educational intervention… training for future considerations!

Value continuing competence, growth, and development in the profession. This capstone paper gave me a chance to reflect on the growth and development I have made while in the nursing program. I have been able to take 3-4 on my own critical patients in the NICU and be able to handle their care completely, while charting which has shown growth, competence, and development within itself.

LAST 24 hrs to provide public comment for consensus document on the insertion, care and maintenance of PIVCs, including the the patient and family experience! Clinicians and patients and caregivers alike reviewing and providing comment will ensure your voice is heard in its final form. We appreciate any and all constructive feedback. This is the first time this has been done globally with a patient advocate actively participating on the team. I appreciate the clinician leaders recognizing the wisdom of lived experience and giving me a safe space to contribute. So why care about PIVCs? As we are told in the hospital, they are just an IV. But they are not. PIVC stands for peripherally inserted venous catheter. It is the most commonly used invasive medical device in healthcare! It is commonly known as the IV many receive to get anesthesia before procedures to get medicines and IV fluids in the ER or during pregnancy. Simply they are devices that go into the bloodstream. But most importantly they are a risk for infection and there are inequities in how they are inserted, cared for, and maintained. And for many of us with chronic and rare diseases they are used for much more purposes! For me, my life is dictated by the ability to get the IV inserted and working well without infection! I have seen the insertion, care, and maintenance of PIVCs evolve and differ across the country. Excited to see this process progressing and us getting closer to a final publication. ANA wants to know- How do nurses contribute to economic value? What have I left out? Please add to the conversation~ Nurses contribute to economic value in numerous ways: Nurses contribute to economic value through primary prevention, patient education and delivery of quality interventions and by questioning orders, nurses reduce morbidity, mortality, length of stay, costly complications, improve quality of life and mental health. Transcultural nursing contributes to economic value because it increases and improves communication and cultural understanding that in turn helps improve patient trust and engagement in care, and improves outcomes. Through the development of knowledge and and evidenced based interventions and improvement of processes and by educating and developing the next generation of nurses, nurses contribute to economic value. Nurses contribute to reducing health costs by their willingness to provide care to all individuals regardless of social status, color or race or where they live~ Nurses go where other providers refuse to go~ -Rural communities -under bridges -in shelters -churches Nurse’s teaching students at various developmental phases about health and nutrition, leading youth engagement activities in schools through health clubs, HOSA programs, nurse academies, and the school nurses provision of very needed care to children at school all adds economic value. Nurses and nursing student pop up clinics and health fair booths provide needed screening, education and referrals to uninsured US residents which contribute greatly to economic value. Through health policy advocacy and grass roots efforts, nurses advocate and educate leaders to make decisions to support health worldwide. This adds economic value. What have I left out? Please add additional ways that nurses contribute to economic value.
