⚡️This is the energy we're bringing into the week: NEC kicked off our concert season with a live performance featuring an all-star faculty ensemble from the Contemporary Musical Arts department, with music from Persian, Appalachian, Middle Eastern, African, and Jewish traditions as well as jazz, avant-garde, new works, and more. In this performance, we hear the group perform Balla Kouyaté's electric composition, "Democracy." https://lnkd.in/gRwy4x2C

With profound sadness, NEC mourns the passing of John McNeil, who died at home in New York City on September 27, 2024. A legendary artist and beloved educator, McNeil taught at NEC from 1980 through 2022. “John McNeil was an artist of the highest caliber and was one of the cornerstones of NEC’s Jazz Studies Department for over 40 years,” says Jazz Studies Department Co-Chair Ken Schaphorst. McNeil’s mark on the music was indelible, and his acerbic sense of humor and dry wit were legendary. He leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of musicians. We are delighted to share that, thanks to a major endowment expansion, NEC Prep's Chamber Music Intensive Performance Seminar (CHIPS) will now be tuition-free for all participants! Co-directed by cellist Laura Blustein and violinist Soovin Kim, CHIPS provides students ages 13–18 with an in-depth chamber music immersion experience emphasizing enhancing chamber music skills and performance. Graduates of the CHIPS program are young leaders in the world of chamber music and have gone on to study at top conservatories and colleges in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to covering student scholarships, the expanded endowment supports faculty salaries and provides opportunities for on-campus and external learning experiences. We are thrilled to be able to remove financial barriers to this transformative program and excited to see the continued impact of CHIPs on our students and the broader musical community!
