Dr. Edem Eniang, executive director of Biodiversity Preservation Center (BPC), is working with his team to protect critically endangered Atlantic humpback dolphins along the Nigerian coast. Dr. Eniang’s work is partly sponsored by the Aquarium’s Marine Conservation Action Fund (MCAF) program, which helps support locally-led, community-based ocean conservation work. MCAF Project Leader Dr. Eniang and his team at BPC are combining community awareness, conservation education, and determination, to prevent fishermen from unlawfully capturing and selling Atlantic humpback dolphins as fish. We saw some beautiful sights on our aerial surveys this spring! 😍 The Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life aerial survey team catalogued a dynamic range of marine life in the waters of southern New England and the Gulf of Maine this spring. Our team of scientists spotted minke whales, fin whales, North Atlantic right whales, basking sharks, dolphins, and more. It’s been a busy first half of the year for our Youth Development programs! Here’s an update on their activities: In April, ClimaTeens Iman and Mariana represented us at the Museum of Science Rise Up Summit, where they informed attendees about how water temperature can influence the sex of a turtle and the impact of climate change on turtle populations. 🐢 In June, ClimaTeens Finley and Mari attended Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW) in Washington, D.C. They participated in advocacy training, learned about the legislative process, and met with representatives from the State Department, NOAA, and the White House Council on Environmental Quality. 🏛️ In July and August, the teens participated in an Environmental Stewardship Trip to Spectacle Island in Boston Harbor. After taking a ferry over, they spent the day tide pooling, hiking, team building, and strengthening their connection with the ocean. 🌊 Thank you to our teen interns for all of their hard work. With the help of local fishers, MCAF Project Leader Clemente Balladares is working to monitor and preserve sea turtle populations off the coast of Venezuela. Clemente’s work involves collaboration with local fishers to tag and measure sea turtles in the nearshore waters of the Gulf of Paria. By gathering information on sea turtle populations and fishery interactions, Clemente and local communities hope to ensure a brighter future for the turtles who call Venezuelan waters home. Five more rehabilitated sea turtles have gone home to the ocean! 🥹 Yesterday, Senator Edward J. Markey joined both Aquarium + Mass Audubon staff to help release rehabilitated sea turtles back into the ocean. After months of recovery at our Sea Turtle Hospital, four Kemp's ridley sea turtles and our largest loggerhead of the season were cleared for release, transported to Cape Cod, and guided into the ocean while dozens of onlookers gathered and cheered nearby. We were honored to have Senator Markey assist with this sea turtle release, as he has been instrumental in pushing forward the Sea Turtle Rescue Assistance and Rehabilitation Act (STRAA). The STRAA would help provide the federal funding for institutions across the country to continue sea turtle conservation efforts. This bipartisan legislation recently moved out of the Senate, which makes us one step closer to passing this bill! "Aquariums are crucial windows to a world that most children and adults don't get to see otherwise." Dr. Letise LaFeir, the Aquarium’s Chief of Conservation and Stewardship, spoke at this year's annual National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) conference to discuss the role of aquariums in conservation and stewardship. Letise shared how our visitor educators are masters of interpreting, educating, and inspiring people of all ages to take action for the ocean. She also discussed how aquariums can—and should—be places where people are inspired to become ocean champions. Way to go, Letise! 👏 #NMEA #NMEA2024 #NMEAConference
