Madagascar's tourism sector is eyeing a significant rebound post-COVID, with ambitious targets of 500,000 tourists by 2025 and a million by 2028. The recent arrival of Emirates has boosted optimism, opening new opportunities for growth and international connectivity. While the country has made strides in rehabilitating its tourism infrastructure since the pandemic, industry leaders caution that achieving these goals requires more than increased air traffic. Tojosoa Lytah Razafimahefa, Chairman of the Confederation of Tourism of Madagascar, emphasises the need for a strategic approach. "We must adopt a clear and coherent vision, supported by well-aligned action plans and strategies," Razafimahefa stated. His comments reflect broader concerns about the challenges ahead, particularly regarding Madagascar's capacity to handle such growth sustainably. As the island nation looks to tourism as a key economic driver, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether it can transform its tourism assets into a thriving industry. Knowing that tourist mobility is responsible for 77% of the sector's emissions and that tourism accounts for almost 6% of regional GDP and more than 3% of jobs in Normandy, this French region has decided to set up a scheme to reward tourists who use sustainable transport to visit certain tourist and cultural sites, with the help of the Région Normandie and partners such as ADEME (the French Agency for Ecological Transition) and the Groupe SNCF nomad train. Travellers can benefit from discounts of at least 10% and up to 50% on certain sites by presenting their public transport ticket. All these sites are accessible by sustainable mobility.   An excellent initiative which shows that promoting a more environmentally friendly tourism is possible. #sustainabletourism #softmobility
