Winning the 3rd place (bronze) 🥉 can be such a strange and awkward feeling. It feels extremely complicated because the bronze is so far away from the 1st (gold)🥇and not even the 2nd (silver)🥈. Can really empathise with Max Maeder when he said he was trying to digest his win of the Olympic bronze medal 🥉 yesterday after several tough races under poor weather conditions for a few days, causing a lot of delay and putting the contestants to the test. This resulted in changing strategies like using a smaller kite for at least one contestant. Had personally experienced two good fights for consecutive years against stronger competitors who took the gold and silver spots, leaving me the 3rd place🥉. Similar to how these athletes and many others, in life, there will always be others that are better and factors that come into play during a competition or a situation, just like what Maximilian Maeder went through at the international stage when he is 17 (kudos to him for keeping cool!) Factors such as Internal factors 1. Mental state of mind 2. Readiness 3. Skills and level of competency External factors 1. Environmental conditions - bad weather, faulty equipment, limited opportunities 2. Unexpected conditions - During my 2nd competition, the giant spot light facing me shattered during my 3-minute story and everyone (including judges) was distracted for a while as glass pieces flew into the audience. The important lesson here is to stay focused, remain calm, be composed and carry on whatever happens, try our best and put in the best effort regardless of how others do and what the circumstances are. Very thankfully, in a subsequent competition with contestants I sparred with earlier, I brought back the trophy for the 1st place (gold)🥇 eventually. The sporting summer continues.... The Olympics are in full swing and I'm making my wife watch it continuously whilst we enjoy some child-free time and the boys are with grandparents! 🚵🏽 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗚𝗕 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 36𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 🥇   I love the Olympics, every 4 years there are always stories of human sacrifice alongside the rollercoaster 🎢 of emotions and fine margins as athletes compete to win gold. 🏆   💪🏽Despite the puncture, Team GB Mountain Biker Tom Pidcock showed remarkable belief and composure to work his way back through the field and win the gold medal.   😌 His support team also did not appear to be in a panic when they had to replace his front tyre as quickly as possible. There was an element of luck (sometimes we need this too) as he was close to his "pit" when he got the puncture. What is even more impressive is that the race leader was a Frenchmen who was getting incredible support from the home crowd. This has been one of the most inspiring stories so far at the Olympics outside of the more publicised stories of athletes overcoming their demons such as that of Simone Biles and Adam Peaty (also just as inspiring!)   The pressure and expectation to perform at a single event every 4 years is an achievement in itself for these athletes.   Athletes show us the required magic formula of both 👟 physical and 🧠 mental wellbeing that underpins elite performance. ❤️ The other thing to mention here is even though these are "individual" sports they are really all team sports. There team consisting with engineers, medical staff etc. and of course families; all playing their part.   So much to think about and learn from these athletes in our own careers and personal lives. As the Tour de France 🇫🇷🚴 draws to a close this year, it's been a race full of unforgettable moments. Some highlights for me include: 🥇 Romain Bardet winning stage 1 and donning this year’s first yellow jersey 🚴♂️ Mark Cavendish achieving his record-breaking 35th stage win 😢 Victor Campenaerts’ emotional stage winner’s interview 🔥 Jonas Vingegaard outsprinting Tadej Pogačar 🌟 Remco Evenepoel proving his worth as a strong contender However, there’s one story that deserves more attention is that of Uno-X Mobility rider Jonas Abrahamsen. In a weight-obsessed sport, Abrahamsen took an unconventional path. Once weighing just 60kg, he struggled to perform at his best. However, upon securing a two-year contract with Uno-X, he embarked on a plan to gain weight gradually, reaching around 80kg. The remarkable fact about this transformation is that it allowed him to increase his peak power from 900 watts to 1,500 watts, making him a more versatile and powerful rider. His improved performance led to leading the Tour de Pologne for two days and achieving a career-best bronze in the Norwegian road race championships. And while all of this could be deemed old news, it’s only thanks to Abrahamsen constant presence at the front of the peloton during the first week of the tour, not looking like a super featherweight that most spectators believe the wearer of polka dot jersey should be. So what does this mean for the rest of us? Hopefully it's finally time to dispel the myth that you can only eat brown rice, grilled chicken and broccoli in measured amounts - and enjoy that mid-ride slice of cake knowing you’re not doing any serious harm to your power. When the Odds Say No, Your Team Can Say YES Canada just stunned the world by winning gold 🥇 in the men’s 4x100 relay at the Paris championships. Here’s the twist: Not a single runner on this team made the finals in the individual 100M or 200M races. NOT A SINGLE ONE. They 🇨🇦 qualified for the final with one of the slowest times, relegating them to the dreaded outside lane. And as the race began, Canada found themselves in 6th place after the first leg. But the team dug deep. They clawed their way up to 3rd, and then Andre De Grasse, OLY stormed through the anchor leg to clinch a victory that no one saw coming. Well, the truth is, nobody saw it coming except for this team. _________ This win wasn’t about individual glory; it was about the power of collective accountability. Each runner took personal responsibility for their leg of the race, and together they achieved the impossible. _________ What can we learn from Canada’s unexpected gold? Watching the Olympics last night was the biggest lesson in why you should NOT be focussed on your competition... Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) and Josh Kerr (UK) were pitted against each other in the whole run up to the men's 1500m at this year's olympics. There were multiple videos of the two of them acting like it was a race just between them, with each claiming they were going to win. Even the commentators said it would be Ingebrigtsen or Kerr across the finish line first. But when the race actually happened they were so consumed by each other that another runner Cole Hocker (USA), just ran straight past them. The runners, commentators and whole audience was shocked. No one saw it coming. Why did I love this so much? Because it's a prime example of how being distracted by your competition makes you lose focus of what you're truly trying to achieve. If both runners had been running THIER best race, they may have been more focussed on winning. They may have even been more open to all possibilities, and seen the other runner gaining on them. But they didn't. There's a lesson to be learned here. Focus on your own race. 👟How did Cole Hocker 🇺🇸 make the good strategic race in the 1500m and won the gold 🏅 against the two favourites, Josh Kerr 🇬🇧 and Jakob Ingebrigtsen 🇧🇻? ▶️Remember Dame Kelly Holmes 🇬🇧 and her gold medal 🏅 in Athens for the women 1500m in 2004? She started last, she was the last but one in the first two laps. It is only in the last lap that she started to overtake a few runners, and the last bend and the last straight that she took the lead and won. How could she mentally still believe that she could win seeing so many competitors in front? 🧠Because she had trained a lot and had learnt to run at a constant pace. She knew her body quite well, she didn’t need the pace maker to maintain her pace and she knew she should speed up in the last lap and especially in the last straight. Lord Sebastian Coe, now president of World Athletics, also overtook his opponent in the last straight to win his gold medal 🏅in Moscow in 1980. ▶️Today, we know with mathematics, with science that this is the best way to run a 1500 meters👉https://lnkd.in/eVdRxpw7 You have to start not too slowly to start your aerobic system as quickly as possible, and those who have a quick aerobic kinetics do not need to start strongly. Keeping a regular pace and speeding up in the last lap and a lot in the last straight is the best strategy. But to do this, you cannot start first from the beginning. Being first is mentally very tiring. ▶️What happened to the ones who lead the race? The Norwegian champion Jakob Ingebrigsten and the two Kenyan runners. They could not keep the pace at the end. This was also the mistake of the French athlete in the semi final. ▶️In the old days, athletes like Kelly Holmes learnt to know their pace just observing their body and sensations. Jakob Ingebrigsten usually starts last and speeds up only in the last two laps. Why did he change his strategy? Too much pressure from the British athlete who had won the gold in Budapest, Josh Kerr? In any case, he lost a lot of energy watching him all the time. An athlete has a brain, and the more you reduce the interaction between brain and muscles, the better the performance. This is why it is better running behind because you do not need to think about your pace, you just follow as if you were tied in and it saves you energy for the end of the race. This is the strategy that the American 🇺🇸 champion Cole Hocker chose. He decided to accelerate in the last bend and he managed to overtake everybody by the inside as Ingerbrigsten was watching Kerr overtaking him on the other side. But to remain behind and have the mental capacity to win means being a champion. ▶️When you go running, do go with a friend, but do not let your brain be attracted by distraction; and as in the old days, you should know your pace from inside, even if you are surrounded by technology. [Data viz] 👇👇 🇫🇷 The elite French indoor championships took place this weekend! 📈 An opportunity to take a look back at the data from the event, in particular the 3,000 metres won by Romain Mornet. 👑 #Championship races are often "waiting races", whether at the #Olympics or the French championships. Athletes want the medal, not the record (see my article on the subject in the first commentary). ✅ Here we see the classic pattern of a middle-distance race   1️⃣ First of all a #fast start to position yourself correctly 2️⃣ Then a slowing down with 100m run at more than 3'00 per kilometre (which is quite #slow)   3️⃣ Finally a gradual acceleration to compete for victory in the #sprint. ⚡️ If you look at the data, you'll also notice that Nicolas-Marie DARU attacked at 2500 metres before taking 3rd place! He was overtaken after a thundering final 100m by Simon Bédard (13'63).  He made up for it the next day by winning the semi-final of the French #crosscountry championships 🤯 This event is fantastic news for me.
