Someone said to me last night: "Don't we have Breast Cancer sorted?" Yes, overall survival is increasing, due to the hard work of scientists, drug developers, and early detection. BUT >40K US women will still die this year, so NO I don't think it is sorted. And in fact, several alarming trends stick out: ❗Breast Cancer is increasing in the under 50 year old population ❗Black women have a 38% higher breast cancer death rate than white women ❗The 5 year survival rate for metastatic breast cancer is still only 30% So while you can purchase a bunch of pink products in Oct, there are better ways to honor this month: ✅ Get screened. And ask you Doctor if you have dense breasts, because if you do mammograms alone are not enough. The Find It Early Act is before Congress now and check out DenseBreast-info, Inc. to learn more. ✅ Support companies tackling metastatic breast cancer. We don't need more "me too" approaches, we need true innovation, such as Concarlo Therapeutics ✅ Donate to charities that specifically support metastatic breast cancer research, like METAVIVOR RESEARCH AND SUPPORT INC, which supported me while I was an academic and helped set the stage for the work that Concarlo is doing. ✅ Take a look at your lifestyle. Do you have modifiable breast cancer risk factors and if so, take steps to improve. Eat well, exercise, reduce alcohol: these all can reduce your breast cancer risk. This month (and all year) honor the researchers trying to tackle this still unsorted problem! #Concarlo #cancerresearchworks #Breastcancerawareness
1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but some are more at risk than others. That's why American Cancer Society is working to provide free mammograms, fund lifesaving research, and more – to create a future without breast cancer as we know it for everyone. Science communications director | I develop scientific research content to effectively communicate our scientific and clinical research to diverse stakeholders
Last week the President's Cancer Panel released their initial assessment of the National Cancer Plan. Below is a brief outline of the Panel's recommendations in five priority areas: 💰 Investment in Research: Urgent need for increased investment in cancer research to capitalize on scientific opportunities. ⚕ Insurance Coverage: Ensuring access to high-quality insurance coverage for all individuals to support cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and survivorship care. ⬆ Building a diverse pipeline: A robust and diverse workforce will increase access to care and help address inequities in cancer care. 🤝 Community Engagement: Investing in and promoting community engagement is essential to achieving the goal of more equitable cancer care and control. 📊 Data Sharing/Integration: Stakeholders from all sectors should optimize the usability and availability of their data, including real-world data, to help drive progress in cancer research. Despite advancements in prevention, early detection, and treatment, there were still 1.9 million cancer diagnoses and over 600,000 cancer-related deaths in the United States in 2023. Continued and new investments in these key priority areas are deemed essential and ultimately ending cancer as we know it. #cancerresearch #equitydiversityinclusion #realworlddata #cancerawareness #endcancer
