We recently went to a science museum that was interactive and immersive. It was splendid. Needless to say I was particularly attracted to the brain and body exhibits. There was one that I loved. Two people had to sit either side of a table with a small disc flat resting on the surface in front of them. All the while both wore a sort of EEG head band that was supposed to measure brain waves. The brief was to concentrate on the disc and move it to the person opposite simply by using focus and attention. Obviously I tried both sides of the table and experimented with different people opposite me. It was fascinating. They had a small screen that visually showed you each person's brain waves. The graph correlated with the success (or not) of moving the disc. Clearly I have no way of knowing the efficacy of the equipment. But the results did show that the more relaxed (therefore slower brain waves) a person was the better the focus which meant they were successful at moving the disc to the other person. Slower brain waves = more focus = greater effect. Are you relaxed today? Or are you shooting from the hip at the slightest upset? If so, it's worth stopping and going for a quick walk . Then go to the toilet and quietly count your breath. Perhaps to the count of 5 in and 5 out...it's up to you. Five minutes is enough to get yourself back into effectiveness. #brainresearch #brainwaves #neuroscience #takecontrolofyourlife #businessefficiency

The brain and its functioning are among the most fascinating topics to read about. It is the most complex instrument known to man, supercomputers notwithstanding. Using the brain to unravel its own secrets, is a very meta activity that makes the understanding of the brain even more fascinating. One of the subjects within brain study that I have come across, that has always fascinated me is the intricate interconnections between various parts of the brain that work in unison to synthesize more complex constructs like self image (for those interested, please read in particular the section on "Capgras Syndrome" in the book, Phantoms in the Brain by Dr. VS Ramachandran). Very interesting article on how our "idle mind" helps construct our self image, fuels the inner chatter, and probably has tantalizing links to how eastern philosophies in particular lay emphasis on mindful meditation to still the idle mind, to focus it. The quanta magazine article gives us a good peek yet leaves so much more to be said about the brain's 'idle-state' (like any good research article does and should). Here are some of my thoughts based on learning from Cognition and Neuroscience programs at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR The Default Mode Network (DMN) of our brains plays a role in our self-image and much more. 1/DMN helps us connect dots between related and unrelated points igniting creative thought. E.g. how sometimes while making a difficult decision or solving a difficult problem, the aha moment happens during rest time when our brain is seemingly idle! 2/It chugs considerably high fuel (+80% of the energy that the brain consumes) to run DMN and switch between DMN and salience networks. *hint it's not so idle to stay idle after all. See the big picture! 3/For many neurotypes (especially those with attention deficiency), it keeps running in the background even during focused task sessions and sleep. *which connects it to tangential thoughts, lucid dreams, and so on.. Personal analogy: I like to think of DMN as us (our brains) taking a tidying-up break in our living room (memory) while we find missing items (thoughts and neural connection) and sometimes even a whole new room layout (narratives and thought-processes)! If you needed one more reason- let it be this- to take some rest and allow your brain to do some tidying-up :)
