Interesting use of a stage-gate innovation process in the restaurant industry. Chipotle just announced that two automated systems are being tested for the first time in two restaurants in California: The “Autocado”, an avocado processing cobotic prototype, and the “Augmented Makeline” which assembles bowls and salads, while employees continue to prepare other meals and serve customers. It's also supposed to address customer complaints about inconsistent portion size by automating the preparation process. Both prototypes were developed using Chipotle’s stage gate innovation process. Field testing of an MVP is a critical step in the process and incorporating staff and customer feedback are the next steps before determining broader pilot plans. Chipotle has used their stage-gate process successfully on a number of product launches, so Starbucks hopes to learn a few tricks from them by luring away their CEO. I'm truly amazed at the pace at which foundation models are revolutionizing the field of robotics, and recent developments have far surpassed what I expected in just the first days of 2024. The strides made by Google DeepMind in the realm of robotics are groundbreaking (https://lnkd.in/gMmTbqZY). AutoRT, for instance, uses these models for more effective training of robots, allowing them to operate in a variety of environments and coordinate complex tasks. SARA-RT builds upon this by enhancing Robotics Transformers, leading to greater efficiency and quicker decision-making in robotic actions. RT-Trajectory adds another layer of sophistication by improving task performance through visual outlines in training videos, aiding in generalization and adaptability. Another example of impressive robotics work from Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL) - project Mobile ALOHA (https://lnkd.in/gazRi3Fv). It's a stellar example of how imitation learning from human demonstrations is pushing the boundaries in robotics. The results are nothing short of impressive - success rates for executing complex tasks like sautéing shrimp or operating elevators have soared, reaching up to 90% efficiency. The implications of this are enormous, hinting at a future where household robots can autonomously perform a wide range of intricate tasks. With the datasets based on accumulated real-world interactions and knowledge, the scope for improvement and advancement in robotics is vast and exciting. The future of robotics, it seems, is already here, and it's unfolding at a pace and scale that's both surprising and awe-inspiring.
