🚂 Charting a More Inclusive Journey in UK Rail 🤝 The railway lines we lay and the services we operate connect communities far and wide. But how connected are we within our industry when it comes to inclusivity? In the dynamic landscape of UK Rail, it's vital that the diversity of our nation is mirrored in the workforce driving it forward. Each one of us has the opportunity to contribute to an environment where everyone, regardless of their background, feels they belong and can flourish. Here's how we can each be a catalyst for inclusion in UK Rail: Seek Out Voices - Engage with colleagues from different roles, departments, and backgrounds. Every perspective can offer new insights that enhance our services and solutions. Foster Open Dialogue - Encourage discussions about diversity and inclusion, not just as a topic for training days but as a daily practice. Support Progression - Mentor and support the progression of underrepresented groups within the industry. Their advancement is our industry's growth. Cultivate Awareness - Train ourselves to recognise our biases and the systemic barriers that others may face, and work to dismantle them. Make It Personal - Reflect on what inclusion means to you personally and professionally. How can your actions create a more welcoming workspace? The tracks are laid for a more inclusive future, but it's the collective effort that moves the engine forward. Let's be proactive in ensuring UK Rail is not just a mode of transport but a beacon of inclusivity and progress. #UKRail #InclusiveRailway #DiversityAndInclusion #WorkplaceCulture

🛤️ On 11th April, Ella Sanders (She/Her) and Owen Bell attended the Rail Forum event, Stations: Building today for tomorrow, to learn from rail industry leaders on how to improve stations, boost passenger numbers and improve inclusivity. The event coincided with Copper’s forthcoming report on rail stations in the UK, which polled the public on what their priorities are for their local train station. In a day of interesting presentations and engaging discussions, we learnt: 🚉 The rail industry believes that understanding community needs is key to improving stations 🚉 Stations need to be reorientated away from traditional commuter use, and towards a world where off-peak and leisure travel is more prevalent 🚉 Station operators need to work with businesses and Network Rail to deliver effective improvements to stations which will have a lasting impact 🚉 Network Rail is working with station operators to make stations more accessible to those with disabilities and neurodiverse people. 🚆🌟🚆 #ConnectingScotland Yesterday I attended the #Rail #Scotland #Conference, bringing together industry leaders and stakeholders from across Scotland's Railway. Cabinet Secretary for Transport in Scotland, Fiona Hyslop MSP, opened the conference with an emphasis on delivering a #betterfutureforrail, with a strong commitment to contributing to a #netzero future and emphasising their determination to continue to integrate #track and #train seamlessly, ensuring a more efficient and passenger-centric rail system. It was good to hear from Transport Scotland, Network Rail, ScotRail, and other stakeholders discuss Scotland's strategic priorities and future challenges. #Decarbonisation was a central theme, with a clear commitment to replacing diesel trains and promoting sustainable modes of transportation although this is not without its challenges. The focus on enhancing the #passenger #experience makes it clear that Scotland's rail sector is dedicated to delivering a step change in how passengers perceive and interact with rail travel. For future rolling stock procurement the #comfort of the #trainseat and #level #boarding are going to be a focus. In addition to strategic discussions, there were interesting presentations safety highlighting the industry's commitment to ensuring the #wellbeing of both passengers and staff, the importance of fostering a positive #employee experience, and, attracting new #talent to the rail sector emerged as a priority, underscoring the need for a diverse and skilled workforce for the future. And, last but not least, hearing from the very passionate Heather Waugh advocating for the future of freight and its importance to a greener economy. On a final note, I am also looking forward to travelling on TransPennine Express and trying their new on-board catering offer. Jools Townsend from Community Rail Network emphasised the integral role of railways in connecting communities, fostering local engagement, and the importance of collaboration between rail operators, local authorities, and community groups in driving positive social impact. Beyond the insightful panel discussions and presentations, the networking opportunities were invaluable. I had the pleasure of connecting with many industry leaders and exploring potential collaborations. Ahead of this year’s TransCityRail Midlands conference, journalist Dan Benn spoke to Andrew Dugdale (our Market Director for Rail, Metros, LRT and Highways) for a Rail Technology Magazine piece on ‘Supporting major transport in the Midlands’. 📰 As well as discussing the particular ways in which major transport projects can be supported in the Midlands, Dann and Andrew also spoke about how key factors can significantly improve the delivery of these programmes. “I think collaboration is everything. In the short time I’ve been at SYSTRA [we] have really seen the importance that we as a business put on collaboration through the UK. You can’t deliver projects on your own, so you need help from somebody else, either at a personal level or at a business level. That collaboration and how people do business with each other, how companies do business with each other, is absolutely key.” 🤝 Read the piece in full: https://loom.ly/ARY8EX0 #rail #metro #lightrail #highways #transport #Midlands #collaboration #expertinsight #SYSTRAexpertise
