GGP Consult provide considerable resources with a wide range of expertise - including Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Marine Engineering, Seismic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture and Project Management.   Project Example… Stallingborough North Beck Outfall Stilling Pipe Platform Design A platform was needed to allow access to the top of the stilling tube for North Beck Outfalls, into the Humber Estuary (at Stallingborough) above a sluice gate. Due to the environment, with tidal and sea loadings, a new platform was needed to provide safe access for the maintainers. The maintenance area also had to prevent large debris from falling into the outfall as well as preventing the sluice gates from being operational. Furthermore, the platform (and elements of the platform) needed to be removable to allow maintenance of the sluice gates below the platform. GGP Consult worked closely with the contractors (AmcoGiffen) who were contracted to the end client - we designed the platform from first principles and modelled the frame using design software. The final platform design satisfied the clients brief and met their objectives. Not only did GGP Consult have to undertake complex calculations – they also had to ensure that supporting documentation to the relevant client H&S requirements was produced. The platform was installed and is currently in use. Why and how could the older infrastructure especially the bridges construced across mighty rivers in the very hostile environment survive more than their expected or designed life? Why the recent built infrastructure are either collapsing much before their estimated lifetime or even during the construction time inspite of having following technological advancements: 1. site investigations 2. understanding of material properties 3. numerical design 4. physical and mathematical model studies facilities 4. high quality skills in execution 5. instrumentation to monitor the health and diffects and many more.. Are the all loading patterns (seismic and hydraulic) and geotechnical heterogeneity not understood or not taken into account during the design? Are the extreme climatic loading conditions have been considered in the design? Or is the olden days conservative design only the best alternative? Where are we lacking or failing? I'm getting doubts on our so called the recent engineering marvels. I don't have any convincing justification for this. These are my few doubts as non civil engineer?

LESSONS TO LEARN FROM THE ØRESUND BRIDGE    According to Trevor English (2019), the Øresund Bridge is a marvel of modern engineering. It consists of a combined road and rail line that runs for 8 kilometres and then transitions into an underwater tunnel. The bridge/tunnel stretches 12 kilometers, connecting Denmark and Sweden. It’s the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe. The bridge was opened in July of 2000 as the primary means of transit for the entire region. The structure carries a data cable through its infrastructure that serves as a connection hub for much of the internet access across Europe. There is also manned and unmanned security and a toll gate with a customer center. The underwater tunnel was created to avoid interference with air traffic from Copenhagen airport while providing a better channel for ships both in good and bad weather. Work started with a geostatic and underwater survey (including underwater photographic statistics) by marine engineers and an observation to avoid strategic infrastructure like undersea communication and power cables, oil and gas transportation pipes, and offshore mining drills and especially engineering design of the data cable that transits the bridge   What interests me in this infrastructure is how the data cable was laid to ensure minimal service outages and maintenance. Crossing a bridge of this magnitude with a data cable requires not only civil engineering experience but OF norms and regulations, quality assurance and commissioning expertise. Can this serve as an example to some African countries where these cables cross major bridges, link cities and countries but have been left exposed to the mercy of rodents, birds, insects and people with bad intentions. It is to be noted that internet resilience for West African undersea cables is approximately 32%.

The project involved multidiscipline design integration to achieve successful commissioning in line with the programme. Due to the geographical location, some of the signalling assets required consideration for corrosion because of the marine environment. In addition, some of the proposed locations at which the signals were sited provided a challenge due to the ground conditions and rock faces. GGP Consult became involved in the project at the early stages of GRIP 4 to provide design packages, topographical surveys and ground Investigation to deliver the project from outline design to detailed design. Prior to the commencement of GRIP 4 GGP provided a GAP Analysis for Topographical and Ground Investigation Information. The project required us to undertake the detailed design for various asset types - the deliverables at each stage were issued which included drawings, models, F001/F002/F003, design logs and DRAs. We were able to complete the design work, allow for the construction works to commence and for installation to be complete to achieve commissioning. Due to the project scale, we had to work closely with other delivery parties and manage the interfacing deliverables. Further to this, the design teams who were involved throughout the GRIP 4-8 provided the in-depth knowledge to produce compliant designs. The project manager also ensured detailed trackers of each design deliverable was provided, highlighting any potential programme risk to the client which ensured any issues were dealt with in a timely manner and did not impact the programme.
