By 2030, it is projected that there will be ∼26 million new cancer cases and 17 million cancer deaths per year worldwide. This Figure shows all 14 cancer hallmarks with the inclusion of four new emerging hallmarks and enabling characteristics, unlocking phenotypic plasticity, non-mutational epigenetic reprogramming, senescent cells, and polymorphic microbes. #oncology has always been an active area of #clinicalresearch and development of new innovative cancer treatment, it all comes down to figuring out how to interrupt what makes #cancer cells special and immortal, by interfering with one or more of the below hallmarks of cancer.

Melittin, a peptide found in bee venom, has shown potential in killing cancer cells through several mechanisms: 1. Membrane Disruption : Melittin integrates into the cell membranes of cancer cells, creating pores or disrupting the lipid bilayer. This leads to cell lysis, where the cell membrane becomes permeable and the cell contents leak out, causing cell death. 2. Induction of Apoptosis : Melittin can trigger programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancer cells. It activates various signaling pathways that lead to the activation of caspases, enzymes that play a crucial role in the apoptosis process. 3. Inhibition of Cell Proliferation : Melittin can inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells by interfering with cellular signaling pathways that regulate cell growth and division. This can prevent the cancer cells from multiplying. 4. Inhibition of Angiogenesis : Melittin has been shown to inhibit the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) that tumors need for growth and metastasis. By reducing the blood supply to the tumor, melittin can starve the cancer cells of necessary nutrients and oxygen. 5. Disruption of Cellular Signaling: Melittin can interfere with various signaling molecules and pathways within cancer cells, such as the PI3K/Akt pathway, which is often upregulated in cancer. This disruption can lead to reduced cell survival and increased sensitivity to other treatments. Overall, melittin’s ability to target cancer cells selectively while sparing normal cells is a key factor in its potential as an anti-cancer agent. However, further research and clinical trials are necessary to fully understand its mechanisms and to develop safe and effective therapeutic applications.
