By integrating emotional health assessments into routine pediatric care, The Roadmap Project ensures that emotional well-being is prioritized alongside physical health. On Episode 86 of the Well Beyond Medicine Podcast, we sat down with Erica Sood, PhD, pediatric psychologist from Nemours Children's Health, pediatric psychologist Jill Plevinsky, PhD, from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and pediatrician Carole Lannon, MD, MPH from Cincinnati Children's to discuss this initiative. https://bit.ly/45QpuXf The project aims to enhance emotional well-being among children with chronic conditions by raising awareness, validating stress during routine care, and building confidence among clinical teams to address these needs. #PediatricHealth #PediatricCare #EmotionalHealth

The alarming squeeze on pediatric care: navigating reduced time for teen well-child checks In academic settings, I've noticed that administrators are increasingly pressuring pediatricians to reduce the duration of teen well-child checks from 30 to 20 minutes. This is concerning. I firmly believe that our role is indispensable and cannot be compromised in such a manner. It's crucial to recognize our value; if we start doubting our necessity, the administration will likely intensify their demands. Establishing boundaries is essential, even if it's a new experience for us. If setting a boundary results in dismissal, it's not necessarily negative. It can be a protective measure, saving us from future, possibly more intense pressures. It's important to understand and respect our professional limits. Starting with small steps is key. There's no need for grand gestures; subtle yet firm boundary setting can be very effective. Sogol P. is a board-certified pediatrician, co-founder, managing partner, and CEO, ABC Pediatric Clinic. Trauma-free care for sick children Drawing blood, inserting an IV, or looking into the ear; even seemingly simple medical procedures can cause anxiety, pain, and stress in children. According to pediatric intensivist Piet Leroy, comfort and trust are just as important as the medical treatment itself. He is researching how healthcare providers can offer trauma-free care and how they can learn to apply comfort care. "A sick child doesn't understand why an examination or treatment is necessary, and will resist," explains Leroy. "Soon, the situation escalates because healthcare providers want to thoroughly examine and treat the child. However, being restrained just once to look into their ears can be a very unpleasant experience for a child that they will remember."
