New research out from The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) on the energy burden faced by residents of America's largest cities. Simply put: too many households are paying too much to meet their energy needs. We must continue to prioritize investments in efficiency to lower these costs and ensure that our efforts center the families and communities bearing the highest burdens in our current energy system. #energyburden #cleanenergy #energyequity https://lnkd.in/eKwWCNUk

$20 billion for investing in clean energy announced yesterday with at least 70% earmarked for low-income and disadvantaged communities on individual and village-wide infrastructural scales. Intended as a springboard for additional private investment, the money granted to 8 nonprofit "green banks," creates a "national clean energy network" that has committed to delivering 3 objectives: "reducing climate and air pollution; delivering benefits to communities, especially low-income and disadvantaged communities; and mobilizing financing and private capital." 👏 Empowerment through #communityenergy 👏 The Internal Market for Electricity Directive (IEMD), a key Directive of the EU #CleanEnergyPackage, acknowledges #CommunityEnergy as an “effective and cost-efficient way to meet citizen’s needs and to boost consumer engagement and participation within the energy system.” Specifically, it recognises the capacity of community energy initiatives to empower and protect consumers: “Community energy can also advance #energyefficiency at household level and help fight #energypoverty through reduced consumption and lower supply tariffs. Community energy also enables certain groups of household customers to participate in the #electricity markets, who otherwise might not have been able to do so.” BUT - it does not explicitly reinforce the role of community energy initiatives in tackling energy poverty, for example by enabling access to #renewableenergy for vulnerable consumers or boosting their #engagement within the energy system. As such, the IEMD lacks any concrete provisions elaborating how Member States should address or support tackling energy poverty through energy communities.
