Brisbane’s biggest drawcard: Insights from Our Poll Last month, we conducted a LinkedIn poll to tap into the perspectives of our members and followers, seeking to identify the key factors that make Brisbane an attractive destination for residents and visitors alike. The results were as follows; 🍃 Natural Beauty and Recreation: 57% 57% respondents prioritised Brisbane's natural beauty and abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. From green spaces to parks and iconic landscapes, Brisbane’s natural assets serve as a cornerstone of its appeal. 🎭 Cultural Scene: 20% A significant portion of respondents, highlighted Brisbane's vibrant cultural scene, encompassing festivals, museums, and galleries. The Committee is pleased to see creativity and culture as a key pillar of a city's liveability being represented so strongly in the results. ️🤾♂️World-Class Sporting Events and Facilities: 17% For 17% of participants, Brisbane's reputation as a hub for world-class sporting events and facilities stood out as a key drawcard. 🎓 Quality Education and Research Institutions: 6% While a smaller percentage highlighted Brisbane’s education and research institutions as a key drawcard to the region, we recognise its significance in the development of a better Brisbane. These institutions not only contribute to the city's intellectual capital but also attract students and researchers, further enhancing Brisbane's reputation as a knowledge hub. As an Urban Development Institute of New Zealand UDINZ Board member and Beca representative on last year's Delegation, I am super excited that this year’s UDINZ Trans-Tasman Delegation has been announced. As plans have been brewing in the background, I have been reflecting on the themes that stuck with me from last year: • While urban development in AU operates on a different scale (population, availability of land, backfilling areas of 3-6 storey with 20-60 storey) there are outcomes being achieved and ways of working that Aotearoa can aspire to. • The cross section of developments visited last year had clear vision and commitment to delivery, with private developers leading the way, supported by local council and state govt that is willing to say ‘yes’ and enable the development.  • State and Federal Govt, often in partnership, are progressing major infrastructure moves (e.g. New West Sydney Airport) that catalyse private development at scale and creation of whole new communities. Major events are also a catalyst, but the legacy these leave needs to be sustainable (a reflection from Brisbane, where they are gearing up for the 2032 Olympics). • Great public amenity and facilities can be incorporated in development. There are some tools and mechanisms to support this (e.g. NSWs Voluntary Planning Agreements), but underpinned by willingness to collaborate. • Even developers of high rise apartment buildings are looking to create a sense of community, through the facilities and spaces they provide within the buildings and contributions to shaping the surrounding neighbourhoods - creating thriving communities. • Aotearoa’s approach to iwi engagement and move towards partnerships is a unique proposition when it comes to city shaping. Where do the world's wealthiest live? The 2024 Henley & Partners World’s Wealthiest Cities report reveals that New York City is home to more UHNWs than any other city in the world. The combined wealth of New York’s 349,500 millionaires, 744 centi-millionaires and 60 billionaires now exceeds that of most G20 countries. New York was followed closely by other cities including Tokyo, Los Angeles and Sydney. Melbourne's inner city makes a remarkable contribution to Victoria's economy. On just 0.2% of the state's land, Victoria's nine inner city municipalities generate 35% of the state's economic output. And there are huge interdependencies between each of these municipalities. 👩🏽 Some 158,000 people working in the City of Melbourne live in one of the other inner city municipalities (and 19,000 residents of the City of Melbourne travel to work in one of the other inner city municipalities). 🏦 There's a fantastic network of high streets, villages and other inner city experiences that enhance the Melbourne visitor experience. 💊 Sectors such as health, biotech, technology, live music and hospitality are stronger because of the agglomeration that occurs across the inner city. As part of our work on the City of Melbourne's new Economic Development Strategy, it's been great to explore these issues with colleagues from the other M9 Councils (Darebin City Council, Merri-bek City Council, Maribyrnong City Council, Moonee Valley City Council, City of Port Phillip, Yarra City Council, Hobsons Bay City Council, City of Stonnington). Downtown Miami is being TRANSFORMED! This is the master plan that will change the city. Miami will be the most exciting urban center in America. It is growing more every day, it's population, and it's economy as well. So what's the ultimate goal for the city? -Turn Downtown Miami into the most livable urban center in the nation. -Strengthen its position as the Epicenter of the Americas an international center of commerce, culture and tourism. But how will this happen? 1. By connecting and enhancing the Central Business District, the Arts and Entertainment District, Brickell and the Waterfront. 2.
