Today we're tackling a topic that can make or break your job search. When you spent hours writing your perfect resume, you hit submit and crickets. Is it you? Is it your skills, your experience? Is it a wormhole? It could be a silent resume killer. The applicant tracking system or the dreaded ATS&AS is basically a. Robot HR system that scans resumes for keywords and qualifications and based on that it decides whether a human sees it or not. If your resume isn't formatted just right, it gets tossed into reject pile before that human ever sees it. A TS systems are programmed to screen out people based on keywords. So it is super important to use keywords in your resume. You may ask yourself well how the heck do I know what keywords that employer wants? This is super simple. Carefully read the job description because the employer is giving you the keywords. Daycare. About right there in the job description. Sprinkle those keywords throughout your resume, especially in the experience and skill section. Using one generic resume will get you nowhere. Customize your resume for each and every job you apply to. This will increase your chances of getting through the ATF. OK well that's great but I'm applying to job after job and that's a lot of work and most companies goes me anyway. I know applying to jobs is not about quantity though. Sometimes it may feel like it. It's about quality and getting you past those bots. You need to format your resume for the ATS. Keep your resume simple and clean. A beautiful resume that was formatted by a resume writer with lots of graphics and matching logos for each and every company you ever worked for may appeal to the human eye, but the atheist doesn't share those feelings. Scrap the fancy fonts, graphics, pictures, blasts of colors and tables. Most systems simply do not. Recognize graphics or tables, they parse them incorrectly and this will lead to your skills and experience to be incomplete or missing altogether. This then can lead to gaps in your employment history and a one way ticket. Back to the rejection. Paul again. Oh, and please ditch the mug shot or the glamour shot from a decade ago. Trust me, even the hiring manager doesn't want to look at those. When creating a resume for the ATS, it is best used common fonts like Arial, Calibri or Times Enrollment. ATS software relies on straightforward. Next, you want to maintain consistent font sizes and formatting throughout your document. This is super important. Use reverse chronological order. List your most recent experience first to avoid any misinterpretations or employment gaps AT systems. Simply prioritize the most recent work experience. Use standard headings like professional experience, education, skills, and certifications. This makes it easy for the system to parse your resume though. Boost almost every day. Avoid abbreviations and acronyms. The ATS doesn't know jargon, abbreviations, or acronyms, at least for now, so just avoid them. Spell out terms fully so they're identified and matched with the job description. Does all of this sound too complicated? Do you prefer our template? Simply follow the link provided. And don't forget about the file name of your resume. Instead of something like Jane Doe August 2023, which will look still in September of 24, you specific file names like Electrical Engineer. Jane Doe to keep it current. It also makes it easy for the HR manager, who may have a dozen jobs to fill, to find your resume. After you build your perfect ATS friendly resume, use resume checkers like Jobscan or CVS Skin or converted to a simple text document to make sure it is ATS compliant. If headers are missing, text is missing, or it simply looks off, you have some work to do. By following these tips, you can significantly increase your chances of your resume standing out to both the bot. Then your future boss. A great resume is your first impression, so make it count.
