The Oregon legislature’s Joint Committee on Transportation is preparing to develop a funding package for the 2025 session and will be in or near your community sometime in the next few months. 1000 Friends of Oregon is teaming with environmental- and transportation-justice partners to advocate for legislation that meets the needs of all Oregonians. It is essential that the 2025 funding package supports a safe, clean, fair, and accountable transportation system. Oregon should be equitably investing its transportation revenue across the state for the benefit of everyone, not just suburban commuters in the Portland metro area. The 2025 package should prioritize increasing access to clean transportation modes, whether they be electrified public transit, electric vehicles of all classes, walking and rolling, or micromobility options like e-bikes and e-scooters. Investments should aim to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities, and improve livability through clean air and healthier built environments. If Oregon continues passing a transportation package roughly every eight years (and is successful in 2025), then it will be 2033 before Oregonians have another opportunity to advocate for smart transportation investments in our communities. Now is the time to get involved. The next listening tour stop June 18 in Tillamook. From there, the committee travels around the state. Make sure to find a location near you and save the date to provide public comment.

It was a great privilege moderating the panel, Reparative Planning and Alternatives to Highways, at the Transportation Research Board's 2nd Conference on Advancing Transportation Equity. I was in conversation with fellow freeway fighters, Amy Stelly, Ben Crowther, and Ally Smither to discuss key disconnects between what government agencies claim to prioritize and the impact their projects ultimately have on communities, as well as organizing for reparative justice, building coalitions to stop highway expansions, and recalibrating transportation priorities to reduce and redress place-based harm. #transportation #transportationequity #reconnect #communities #reparative
