Trusting an institution that doesn't prioritize our best interests, serving the rich and elite, is a challenge. The RCMP's history with Indigenous Peoples is fraught with painful experiences, from forced removals to residential schools and the excessive use of force continues. It's understandable why trust is hard to come by. $50 million invested in policing since 2017 begs the question: is this private security or RCMP? Right, who's money? Many, like myself, have lost faith in the RCMP. Our experiences have left us feeling unprotected and unsupported. Watching the entitlement and abuse of authority is disheartening and cruel. All of my life I've witnessed and suffered no different. I do no trust the RCMP with any dealings of Indigenous Peoples. It's time for acknowledgment of past wrongs, continued and ongoing wrongs and concrete actions for a more just and equitable future for all. 🌍✊ #IndigenousRights #Reconciliation https://lnkd.in/gfnsVeSW

🔔 #Bosnia TRIAL International and its partner Zaboravljena Djeca Rata welcome the adoption on Tuesday of the Proposal of the Law on the Protection of Civilian Victims of War by The House of Peoples of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Proposal brings significant changes, including the recognition of the status of civilian victims of war for children born as a result of war rape and the improvement of the rights of civilian victims of war (including medical spa treatment). As Ajna Mahmić, Legal Advisor at TRIAL International in BiH, explains: ¨In addition to advancing the survivors' rights, this law also sets strong foundations for encouraging empathy, understanding and reconciliation within our society. Although we waited for this law for so many years, and even though it has its imperfections, we are looking forward to the changes it will bring.” #CRSV #VSS

Today and every day, the words of Nelson Mandela continue to ring true here in Canada. #MandelaDay #NelsonMandela #OPCAT As Canada approaches its 4th Universal Periodic Review at the United Nations, we are focusing on the rights of people deprived of their liberty in a variety of places of detention across Canada, including those in prisons, institutions and long-term care facilities. Having transparent and independent oversight and accountability mechanisms in all places of detention is key and strengthens human rights protections for those in the most vulnerable circumstances. This is why we continue to call on Canada to ratify the United Nations’ Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Forms of Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. 🔹 Read more about this in our UPR submission ➡️https://bit.ly/46LUCXS 🔹 Read more about this in our recent remarks to Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers Responsible for Human Rights ➡️https://bit.ly/3PUWo35

On 02 May 2024, the Ombudsperson's Office presented a critical document – the Special Report "On the Situation with the Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in Ukraine in 2023". The substantive document contains an analysis of numerous cases of gross human rights violations in places of detention. The report is quite critical, but it is the reports of independent institutions that are useful in ensuring the observance of human rights in penitentiaries and other places of detention. https://lnkd.in/ewgDdtXv https://lnkd.in/e_Dcvfip
