My fellow workers and connections, Today, as we celebrate Labor Day, we honor the countless individuals who have dedicated their lives to the betterment of the working class. We acknowledge the struggles, sacrifices, and achievements of those who have come before us, and we recommit ourselves to the continued fight for fair treatment and respect for workers everywhere. The labor movement has a rich history of fighting for the rights of workers, and it is through the collective action of workers that we have achieved many of the rights we enjoy today. Thanks to the tireless efforts of those who have come before us, we have achieved minimum wage laws, workplace safety regulations, and the right to organize and collectively bargain for better wages and benefits. But the fight is far from over. Today, workers still face many challenges, including stagnant wages, lack of job security, and discrimination in the workplace. As we celebrate the achievements of the labor movement today, we must also recognize that there is still much work to be done. We must continue to fight for fair treatment and respect for all workers, regardless of race, gender, or background. We must continue to push for policies that promote job security, living wages, and safe working conditions. And we must continue to come together as a collective force to demand the respect and dignity that all workers deserve. So let us take this Labor Day as an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past and recommit ourselves to the fight for a better future for workers everywhere. Let us honor the sacrifices of those who have come before us by continuing to fight for justice and equality for all. Happy Labor Day 🫂 🫡

Fantastic explanation of why it is important on Labor Day to recognize the struggles of workers from our distant and not-so-distant past, the hard-earned benefits and worker rights that those struggles gave us today, and why it is important to continue to support the labor movement in an era when power and wealth is becoming more concentrated. There are reasons for hope: unions have made inroads with global companies like Amazon and Starbucks, the salary transparency and pay equity movements are growing, and unions have a chance to play a pivotal role in who is elected to the U.S. presidency in November.

remember that labor rights were not freely given—they were won through relentless struggle, violent civil unrest, and solidarity from haymarket in 1886 to the pullman strike—which was two interrelated strikes in 1894 that shaped national labor policy “the battles were literal: employers and politicians were not shy about busting unions with police forces and hired enforcers” riots, deaths, and bombings were not uncommon workers fought tirelessly for the rights we have today: fair wages, “safe” working conditions, and the eight-hour workday these rights were not gifts from the ruling class out of the kindness of their hearts; they were wrested from those in power through collective action, solidarity, and the courage of everyday people who refused to be silent and exploited the power of the working class lies in our unity without our labor, the ultra-wealthy and the ruling class would not and could not exist their wealth is built on the backs of workers, and their continued success depends on the exploitation of our labor say it out loud: their continued success depends on the exploitation of our labor they thrive because of us and they will never willingly give up their position of power but we are stronger together we still have the power to demand better better pay better hours—hello 4 day work week and better benefits class solidarity is our greatest weapon against exploitation today let’s remember the power we hold and let’s honor those who came before us by standing in solidarity and continuing to organize and engaging in collective action the fight for fair labor practices continues, and our voices are stronger when united id: a poster that features the demands and victories of the labor movement over the decades and the words of Frederick Douglass: “power concedes nothing without a demand — it never has, and it never will.” designed by artist Ricardo Levins Morales he explains: “the social gains of humanity did not invent themselves and will not defend themselves. only organized people can do that.”

Every year on May 1, Labor Day, also known as May Day, is observed in order to recognize and commemorate the contributions of the working class, particularly the labor movement. The idea behind the labor day gave rise to the eight-hour movement, which advocated for an eight-hour workday, eight-hour leisure period, and eight-hour bedtime. In certain nations, Labor Day is also referred to as Worker's Day. This day honors the working class and promotes awareness of their rights as well as the rights of those who employ them. Labor Day is observed to recognise the tremendous effort made by the working class, to educate them about their rights, and to safeguard them from exploitation. Labor Day was first observed in America in the 19th century. Chicago workers launched a walkout on May 1st, 1886, to demand an eight-hour workweek. However, after a bomb went off at a labor rally in Haymarket Square, workers across the US banded together to demand their rights and fight for better working conditions. The International Congress of Socialist Parties, which convened in Paris in 1889, resolved to establish May 1 as Labor Day or Worker's Day. On the other hand, several industries and the trade union and labor organizations expanded in the late 19th century. Trade unionists finally started focusing on defending employee rights as a result of this development from cottage industry and lone laborers to the industrial revolution. Labor unions sought to protect the employees, whether it was via the enforcement of child labor laws, limiting the number of hours worked, or providing safe working conditions. Today, the first of May is honored worldwide as International Workers' Day. “Nothing will work unless you do.” — Maya Angelou “I learned the value of hard work by working hard.” — Margaret Mead “If you labor with honesty and willingness, no job is shameful.” — Nirvik Mohun | Wishing You All A Happy International Labour Day 2024 |
