A probe into how Twitter/X dealt with content relating to the conflict in Israel and Gaza will be the first investigation under the new Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission will investigate the social media platform over its alleged dissemination of propaganda and misinformation relating to the Hamas attacks. Musk’s X is also suspected of breaching its transparency obligations and the deceptive design of user interfaces, which relates to the blue ticks which can now be purchased by users. We're bringing back the "block" in Block Party... (re-)introducing mass-blocking on X (formerly Twitter). 💥💥💥 Select tweet, block retweeters 💥💥💥 People begged us to build this tool for old Block Party because of targeted harassment from high-profile right-wing personalities who would tag them in noxious tweets and sic their followers on them. The more those tweets got RTed, the more intense the harassment would get. Being able to cut off those attacks quickly, at the source, helped a ton to reduce the eventual reach and impact of those abuse campaigns. After we introduced it, though, we saw lots of people using the tool not necessarily to stop harassment, but as a way to clean up their feeds. Particularly when toxic political content was making the rounds, it was a good way to remove a lot of (let's call it) unproductive discourse from the timeline. A smart pricing move from X / Twitter (for a change). To combat abuse and bots, they are planning to introduce a $1 nominal annual fee for all new accounts in New Zealand. Its not the price that will drive the right behaviour, it’s the fact that someone somewhere will have to get out a credit card to sign up. They’re using pricing to influence customer behaviour in a way that might limit sign ups, but more importantly will increase the quality of the customers who do sign up. Twitter (it's still strange calling it X) has started a trial in New Zealand and the Philippines, charging new users $1 a year to access features like tweets (posts?!) and replies. If users opt out of the charge, they'll have a sort of read only account. The bigwigs say that the aim is to "reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity".
