Did you know that studying construction can lead you to work in the public sector for the governments? Mishelle Yam, Community and Place Manager, is a great example of this, showing the abundant opportunities of working in the construction industry. In her role, she develops, manages, and delivers social infrastructure projects for the local community. She looks at under-utilised assets and turns them into valuable resources for the community. As a returning working parent, Mishelle feels that women are now highly regarded in the industry. Women bring different ways of thinking which make social infrastructure more well considered with better outcomes for the community. So at the start of women in construction week I’ll start with a positive. The percentage of women in construction is at an all time high. The not so positive is that this is still only 15% and of those 350,000 women in the UK construction industry, only about 2% or about 7,000are actually out as tradespeople on the construction sites. There is absolutely no reason why the construction industry should not be an attractive career for all. This week we need to fight the good fight for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging and promote the wonderful and varied career opportunities that construction has to offer. In order to meet the governments target of Net Zero by 2050 we need to attract an extra 400,000 people into the industry by 2030 and this simply will not happen if nearly half of the available workforce feel unable to properly engage. #womeninconstruction

Women in Construction Week 2024 As the industry celebrates Women in Construction Week (WiC) and International Women’s Day (8th March), I want to acknowledge the valued contribution of all skilled women in the industry. I started the journey to being in the construction industry 8years ago when I made up my mind to become a quantity surveyor and ever since I have had no regrets on my decision. NAWIC launched Women in Construction Week in 1955 to enhance the success of women in the construction industry and also spread awareness about common issues affecting women working in a male-dominated industry. 78% of women in construction surveyed claim they love their jobs, but that doesn’t mean they have it easy. You have to deal with long hours, temperamental weather, endless mounds of dirt and debris, and hazardous conditions. Imagine having to deal with all that and Sexual harassment, societal stereotypes and discrimination. I have had and still having thorns on the road which should be discouraging but I see it as an opportunity to keep driving if indeed I have made up my mind to succeed in this career path. So, Dear young girl that is considering to take this career path, it may not be all rosy as you expect but you’ll thrive if you set your best to and to other women in construction, The theme for this year’s WiC is keys to the future - celebrating the strength and knowledge of women and the vital role they play in shaping the future of the construction industry. What I find most fulfilling about working in the construction industry, is the strong sense of community. Also, the honesty there’s no room for sugar-coating, there’s a refreshing directness that allows for clean communicating and effective problem-solving. Q. What unique perspectives or skills do you bring to your role in construction? A. I’m such a planner in my personal life, so I love making matrixes and planning schedules in proposal efforts, but I’m also able to pivot quickly, nothing in this industry goes to plan…ever… Q. What advice would you give to a young woman wanting a career in construction? A. Be confident in yourself. It can be intimidating working with majority males – and sometimes you’ll be the only female in the room but remind yourself that you’re there for the same reason they are. #WIC2024 #womeninconstructionweek #womeninconstructionweek
