"The industry offers a variety of job choices that can suit individual preferences, whether you prefer working in the field or an office. Regardless of the role, contributing to projects that will positively impact the community provides a sense of purpose to the job and fosters a special relationship with colleagues. WIC Week Day 2: Keys To the Future Among our team are Riley Lang, Hailey Souder, Blair Engel, Jelena Pandurevic-Magazin, and Rhonda E. Orange, MBA, CET, each bringing unique experiences to the construction industry. These are women with different experiences in construction but have continued this career path due to the rewarding nature. Rhonda Orange was one of the first women at Hill to have been promoted to a managerial position, paving the way for future women of Hill like Riley Lang who has 2 years of experience in the industry and is already a Project Manager.⁠ ⁠ The keys to the future for women in construction lie in fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment where they feel valued and respected. Providing equal opportunities for training and advancement is crucial to ensuring women can thrive and excel in the industry. Like how Jelena received in-house Revit training here at Hill. Implementing policies that promote diversity and address barriers to entry, such as gender bias and discrimination, is essential for creating a level playing field. I personally am looking forward to the fulfillment of the Million Women in Construction Pledge! This pledge reflects a commitment to increase access to training, jobs, and leadership opportunities for women. Many companies are pledging to focus on or scale up equitable hiring and workforce development efforts that create broader pipelines and opportunities for women. John Fish, Chair of The Real Estate Roundtable and Chairman and CEO of Suffolk, said this in responding to the pledge; “The construction industry continues to face significant labor challenges due to the aging workforce and dwindling number of young people entering the construction field. There is a critical need to attract more talent and diversify our workforce to ensure we have the resources to build our cities and grow our economy.” To be successful, the Million Women in Construction initiative will need construction contractors, trade unions, and training institutions to commit to recruit, train, hire, and retain thousands of new and non-traditional workers who will be the next generation of skilled laborers and leaders who are prepared to rebuild US infrastructure and supply chains and complement Federal government investments. WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION 🎉 30 years each = 90 years of experience 🎉 I am so grateful to have bumped into each of these women. I discovered what makes my heart SMILE: advocating for females in nontraditional roles. I have spent most of my career in roles where there was only me: boardrooms, leadership roles, job sites, ownership, and so on. Our industry needs PEOPLE. Associated Builders and Contractors stated that we needed to attract close to 1 million people by the end of 2025. ** How are we going to do this?? Talk to the females with years of experience on how to attract females and the next generation. There are loads of us out there who want to help our industry become better and attract more talent. National Association of Women in Construction (AU) is a passionate organisation dedicated to increasing female participation in the construction industry. Their vision is a future with 25% women in the industry by 2025. NAWIC actively advocates for an equitable industry where women can thrive. They achieve this by: 👷♀️Supporting education and providing resources and initiatives to encourage high school girls to explore construction careers. 👷♀️Raising awareness and working to dispel misconceptions; while highlighting the diverse and interesting job opportunities within construction. 👷♀️Mentorship programs that connect women with experienced professionals to guide and support their career development. Today we're celebrating some of the amazing achievements women are fulfilling every single day, in construction 🏠⚒👷♀️   This #WomenInConstructionWeek we’d like to celebrate the many women at Orwell working in construction related jobs; to take the opportunity to highlight some of their roles but also to raise awareness of the careers available to women in the affordable housing construction related sector.   Women remain significantly underrepresented in the construction industry, still only around 16%, but the industry can’t afford to ignore them. Labour and skills shortages, with high demand and increasing costs, are often cited as the biggest challenge to the future of housing building.    The contribution of women in many areas of the industry could support a more equitable sector: challenging the current male dominated environment. Inclusivity is needed and should be standard and we are committed to pushing this forward.   As women working in the industry, we feel a responsibility to encourage advocacy, education, and networking to inspire future generations. We want to help challenge stereotypes and showcase what can be done. Rather than ‘fall into’ a career in construction we want young women to be aware of the possibilities and be able to positively choose a career in construction and affordable housing construction.   As part of this week's celebrations, we commit to our #WICPledge, where we will: - Visit schools and groups to showcase the work and roles of women in construction. - Actively promote recruitment of women to our construction related roles. - Offer mentoring opportunities to young women starting or looking to start their career. Happy Women’s History Month We want to take the time and honor the Women in Construction who have carved a path for generations to come. Lily Tomlin once said, “The road to success is always under construction.” In a male dominant industry, women are in the pursuit of breaking down barriers and building a future in construction that women can look forward to. Organizations such as the Women in Construction Network seek to establish mentorship programs for women currently in the industry as well as pioneering different ways to help women secure career opportunities for construction jobs.
