What an honor to be in the company of our amazing 2024-2025 Career Success Faculty Fellows representing all academic disciplines and The City University of New York campuses. Thanks to Senior Advisor for Transformation and Distinguished Professor Cathy N. Davidson, Chief Transformation Officer Rachel Stephenson, and University Associate Provost Lauren Andersen for their leadership on this program. Our Fellows have pioneered effective methods of helping students understand the relationship between classroom learning and careers that can be adapted to every field. The program has two major goals: (1) Embedding more career-relevant information into courses through five high-impact areas (syllabus and curriculum revision, student support, work-based learning, employer engagement, continuous improvement & utilization of data); and, (2) Identifying faculty leaders on their home campuses that can introduce their colleagues to similar enhancements in their courses. A Seat at the Table: Shaping the Future of Public Education Last week, I had the incredible honor of participating in a groundbreaking gathering of superintendents who are members of The Network of Distinguished Educators. Reflecting on this inaugural two-day meeting, I'm filled with profound gratitude and excitement for the future of public education in America. To say I felt blessed to be there would be an understatement. Imagine being in a room where the collective experience, wisdom, and passion for education was only surpassed by each individual's humility and hope for a brighter tomorrow! These leaders, each a powerhouse in their own right, came together with a shared vision: to positively impact public education across our nation. Having a seat at that table - not just to observe, but to actively contribute to shaping the organization's future direction and initiatives - was truly a "pinch me, I'm dreaming" moment. The energy in the room was palpable. Ideas were flying, challenges were being dissected, and innovative solutions were emerging in real-time. No one was disillusioned about the gravity of the work ahead, but what struck me most was the genuine commitment to making a difference. This wasn't about buzzwords or flashy initiatives. It was about rolling up our sleeves and tackling the real issues facing our schools, teachers, and most importantly, our students. As we wrapped up the second day, I couldn't help but feel a surge of hope. The road ahead in public education may have its challenges, but with leaders like these at the helm, and organizations committed to meaningful change, the future looks brighter than ever. To my fellow education enthusiasts out there, buckle up! We're in for an exciting ride. The work we've begun has the potential to create waves of positive change across the educational landscape. I'm beyond excited to see where this journey leads and grateful for the opportunity to play a small part in it. 🌟 Reflecting on a transformative weekend at the MPI Tennessee Chapter Mid-Year Board Retreat Placemakr 🌟 Stepping into each board meeting or retreat always brings a mix of excitement and nerves. As someone deeply passionate about MPI, I thrive in these spaces as an idea person. Yet, the shadow of past insecurities sometimes looms large, whispering doubts about my adequacy in fulfilling my role. But amidst the anxiety, I remind myself: I am a volunteer, giving my best. This time was different. As VP of Finance in a pivotal transition year for MPI, including a fiscal year extension and a new prospectus, I found myself at the center stage. I poured my heart into crafting a revamped prospectus, tirelessly seeking ways to better serve our sponsors. Presenting it was nerve-wracking; every question felt like a challenge to defend my hard work. However, amidst the scrutiny, a beautiful realization dawned upon me. Each question, each input, was a testament to the community's care and commitment. We weren't just making decisions; we were engaging in a collective effort to elevate MPI. The aftermath of the presentation held the most precious moment. A call from someone I've clashed with, expressing genuine appreciation for my work, reminded me of the power of connection and understanding. Leadership isn't just about delivering flawless presentations; it's about fostering a community where everyone feels seen and valued. This weekend reaffirmed the essence of MPI: leadership, community, inspiration, networking, and above all, lifting each other up.
