And what is your personal and professional journey that led you here? I started working at Call of Freedom in March of 2022. I professionally have been a therapist for 20 years and have worked in all different areas as far as outpatient, inpatient, mental health, pediatrics along with hospital and nursing homes. I was becoming tired of the redundant schedule of a nursing home setting, so I was looking for something new and different when I saw the opportunity to CTF and took it on. What is your position at CTF & why is it important to the mission? I am a COTA (certified occupational therapy assistant). I believe my position is important in the settings I go into (prison, jails, shelters) because I can work on a lot of things such as coping grounding skills, proper breathing techniques during periods of agitation, proper sleep hygiene, along with budgeting and work skills. Why do you believe in the mission of call to freedom? I believe in our mission because I feel everyone that walks in our doors deserves help and deserves a life everyone wants to live. We are here to offer help, guidance, and hope for those that have had things happen no one deserves, and we are here to break that cycle. What is a moment that sticks out to you from your time working here or why do you feel like it's meaningful? I think every time something positive happens and you see what each individual is capable of is a great feeling for everyone. What is a fun fact about yourself? What You Need to Create An Awake and Walking ICU: Part 4 Empower occupational therapists to provide their expertise. Occupational therapists are invaluable resources for delirium, sedation, and mobility management in the ICU. They are a key part of the "Delirium SWAT Team". Occupational Therapists Need: ADEQUATE STAFFING: Occupational therapists provide the care required if they are spread thin throughout the entire hospital. They are the only discipline proven to prevent readmissions and yet they are forced to run across the hospital to only have time to do the bare minimum with patients. DEDICATION TO ONE ICU: Occupational therapists should be IN the ICU, not just "visiting" the ICU. Like physical therapists, they should be dedicated to one ICU. They need to an integrated part of the team to develop the skillset and relationships to be able to truly optimize occupational therapy in patient care. CRITICAL CARE TRAINING: Occupational therapists need specialized critical care training to be comfortable and competent treating high acuity patients. INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION: When I train teams, I love seeing OT feedback transform from "I have to beg for an order to see patients." "I have to beg nurses to let me see their patients." "I have to beg nurses to turn sedation down/off to be able to do anything with patients" to "When I come on the unit, nurses are grabbing me and pulling me into their patients rooms! It is so fun to be able to really work with patients and make a difference! I am friends with the nurses now!" AWAKE ICU: When an ICU is focused on the goals of the ABCDEF Bundle to have patients awake, communicative, autonomous, and interactive, occupational therapists can finally do THEIR JOBS.
