Last week, Primary Care for America hosted #PrimaryCare24, bringing together healthcare thought leaders, innovators and experts to discuss the importance of Primary Care. Our physician partner, Brady Steineck MD, MBA of Community Health Care, Inc., talked about the importance of long-term, trusting relationships between patients and their PCPs, and how value-based care supports and enhances those relationships. “When you ask patients who they want to see when they get sick, it’s us [their primary care team],” despite other options available to them. Enhancing patient experience by improving access to high-quality, continuous primary care is one of the biggest challenges facing the profession, but value-based care enables PCPs to transform their practices to do just that. Around the world, there are millions of families who live hours, even days, away from the nearest #healthcenter. Being unable to exercise the right to access healthcare leads to deaths or delayed diagnoses for diseases like #malnutrition, whose effects can be irreversible if not treated in time. Community health workers (#CHWs) are key to closing the gap in #healthcare delivery, reaching more people. However, they often operate disconnected from the formal healthcare system, lacking essential medications, necessary equipment and supplies, compromising their well-being, and often, without payment. Great read from Jason A. Wolf, Ph.D., CPXP. This speaks volumes - under CH 5: “… your strongest community outreach effort may be the way in which you make people feel in their encounters with you… through the stories you are creating with your community right now. Those stories are developing and being told whether you help to write them or not… What is the story you want your community to hear about you - not just from you but from all those who work for you and from those who you serve?” In building an organizational narrative, keeping a finger on our community’s pulse helps to drive the narrative. Healthcare organizations must be consistent in the delivery of excellence in care, but they must also listen. What is being said? How do we address the coal in our stories, and how do we make the gold nuggets in our stories shine? What’s scary about this report is it’s supposed to be about veterans and improving care. The majority of the report is about saving VA and preserving VA. Very little talk about increasing care to veterans. Would love to see Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) American Legion DAV (Disabled American Veterans) weigh in rather than sit by and watch Veterans access to care be eroded. Don’t be fooled when the Biden administration touts his care for veterans as his administration has eroded the progress we made in choice. Big question is if VA cares and does so well then why do veterans choose community care at ever increasing rates?
