It’s common to see grocery expand into pharmacies, restaurants into catering, and even convenience stores into restaurants...it's what I call blurring the lines in the industry. The lines between the concepts are there, but blurred. It’s a tactic commonly used by companies to increase their market shares and profits, by essentially going after new business, but one I think can have its limits. Case in point would be Air Guitar the retail store that’s 1 part grocery store, 1 part convenience store, and 1 part upscale market (think Whole Foods). Based in Arizona, Air Guitar offers literally everything under the sun: plant milk next to Starbursts, beer and wine next to coffee, grocery store staples alongside pizza, sushi, and acai bowls. In all honesty, they’re doing too much, and while the store has been in operation for 2 years now – I wonder how sustainable and scalable the concept can truly be. McDonald's is launching a new restaurant concept called CosMc’s, a grab-and-go-style spin-off that will directly compete with the cold drink offerings at #Starbucks, including menu items like churro frappes, pear slushies, and turmeric spiced lattes.
