“What’s the right way to think about the risks and rewards of selecting a board member as your next CEO? And if you decide to give a director the job, how can you—and the person you choose—maximize your chances of success?” Find out more by reading this great article by my colleagues at ghSMART
Excited to share ghSMART's latest Harvard Business Review article, "Should Your Next CEO Come from Your Board?" in the November/December issue. Wonderful partnering with my brilliant colleagues, Reshmi Paul, Heidi Smith, and Samantha Hellauer on this research, based on an in-depth study of 213 S&P CEO successions from 2018 to 2023. Very grateful to our sage, encouraging, and inspired editor Toby Lester as well as his wise colleagues Daniel McGinn, Amy Bernstein, and Sarah Moughty. And to our own colleague Dina Wang for her guidance.

Helping CEOs and Directors Achieve Peak Performance | Executive Coach for CEOs, Directors and Boards | Transformative Accountability Partnership | Award-Winning 90-Day High-Performance Director Program
Let me share this example of a service company. We'll call the CEO Jack. Jack was a powerful figure. A charismatic leader and majority shareholder, he dominated boardroom discussions. His pronouncements carried weight, and dissenting voices rarely found a foothold. This dynamic seemed efficient at first. Projects were greenlit swiftly, fueled by Jack's infectious enthusiasm. However, this very strength became a weakness. One particular project, championed by Jack, promised significant returns. Yet, a crucial element was overlooked – a sound marketing strategy. This blind spot, a consequence of stifled boardroom debate, proved disastrous. Without diverse perspectives challenging assumptions, the company embarked on a venture doomed for failure. The final result? A hefty financial loss – a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked CEO dominance. Why Board Chairs Matter A strong board chair is the antidote to this scenario. They act as facilitators, ensuring a healthy board culture where all voices are heard and valued. Here's how effective chairs steer the conversation: Early Distribution of Board Papers: Giving directors ample time to analyse information and formulate questions ensuring thoughtful discussion. Encouraging Open Discussion: A skilled chair guides conversations, creating a safe space for all directors to contribute, regardless of their stake in the company. Harnessing Diverse Perspectives: A well-rounded board benefits from a variety of experiences and viewpoints. These diverse voices can expose blind spots and uncover potential pitfalls before they become costly mistakes. Jack's story highlights the critical role of the board chair. They are the guardians of good governance, ensuring CEOs don't become echo chambers in their own boardrooms. By having open discussion, critical thinking, and a culture of accountability, chairs empower boards to make informed decisions that lead to company excellence. There are three questions CEOs should ask each member of their board: 1) What does success look like for you in the coming year? (Understand their personal motivation to be at the board table) 2) What are your expectations of your fellow board members? (Understand better how each member is perceiving the work of the board) 3) What must the organization accomplish in the coming year? (Listen for strategies or projects that are not in the annual or strategic plan) Don't know the answer to these questions? Talk to your board members - summer is a great time to connect.

Cultivating resilience in fast-growth companies, transforming business, shaping legacy leaders in sale & post-sale transitions |Trailblazer in Mental Health & Entrepreneurship
“Last time we spoke, just before I headed into a crucial business customer meeting, my mind was like steel—and you were the one who tempered it.” - Stuart D., Doctor D's Sparkling Probiotic Stuart opened our call last week with this statement, and it really stood out to me. In our first session, he went into a critical meeting with a clear, focused mind and achieved the results he wanted. That success led him to call me again for last week’s high-pressure conversation. In this particular client relationship, I earned the trust of Stuart through his business partner after years of working together. He's brought me into last-minute, high-stakes meetings when his business was on the line. These sessions are powerful and impactful, and the results are positive even when different than we expected. The founder CEOs I work with are making critical decisions for their companies, and they’re deliberate about who they trust to partner with them—and rightly so. They choose me not only because I get to the heart of the matter quickly and provide clarity in chaotic moments, but also because I create a safe space for real vulnerability and systemic change in their companies. I’ve worked with over 500 founders to balance strategic insights with emotional intelligence, which helps them navigate both their business and personal leadership challenges with confidence. It’s an honor to help founder CEOs and their teams reconnect with who they are at their core, rather than being defined by the challenges they face.
