Founder/ Executive Director | Nyanam Widows Rising; SD4H Fellow | UCSF; PhD Candidate | Maseno University. I desire to see Africa where widows thrive.
We are thrilled to partner with SFF to advance the human, social, health and economic rights of widows in Kenya. Access and ownership of property, especially land, is one of the most violated economic rights of widows. As we start 2024, Nyanam widows will be - critically analyzing their experiences with land since widowhood - increasing their awareness on their land rights and process for land ownership - designing and implementing social action projects to improve their land ownership At societal level, much needs to change to advance women’s land rights. The practice that women have no voice on land matters should stop The practice that land is registered only in the names of male family members should stop The practice of denying childless widows land should stop
Do you know what makes the first Wednesday of 2024 a thousand times better?! 😜 Welcoming excellent partners like Nyanam Widows Rising to our family. Please show them some love! 💚 Nyanam is a restorative justice organization preparing widows to lead positive community transformation through holistic programs in leadership, health, livelihoods and economic empowerment, justice and human rights, and youth education. Why do we love them? 🤓 Nyanam centers all of its programs on the widows’ voices and needs. Their paralegal training is integral to empowering widows to understand their rights and advocate for themselves in the justice system. We had a fruitful conversation with the Chairman, Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase on how best to galvanize resources for a joint opportunity bordering on Police Reform initiatives and Regulatory framework restructuring . The significance of Non-profit-Government partnerships cannot be overemphasized, especially in resource mobilization, community engagement and inclusivity. We look forward to piloting some activities with the PSC and further strategizing towards the positive change we all seek. https://lnkd.in/d5fsevaT

Proof there are at least 14 trans attorneys in CO! But should there be more? On the 2022 CO demographic suvery, 32 attorneys identified themselves as transgender. Out of roughly 28,300 active attorneys in CO. That’s 0.1% of attorneys. Pew Research Center estimates that 5.1% of adults between 18-29 and 1.6% of adults between 30-49 are trans or non-binary. In Colorado, we need about 3x as many Latine attorneys to represent the population (7.59% of attorneys compared to 22.5% of population). We need about 3.7x as many Black attorneys to represent the population (3.37% of attorneys compared to 12.4% of population). Y’all. We need between 16-51x as many trans attorneys to represent our population. Imagine how many Latine and Black trans attorneys we need!!!
CLBA's first ever Trans and Nonbinary Section Social was a great success! Members of the trans/NB legal community met to network, have fun, and strengthen connections. CLBA looks forward to hosting more events like this in the future and supporting these wonderful members of our community. Jordan Blisk Dana Bradley 🏳️⚧️ Pelecanos (Πελεκάνος) Drew Williams

Happy NAACP Day! Today, we celebrate the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and its rich legacy of fighting for justice, equality, and civil rights. On this special day, let us reflect on the remarkable achievements of the NAACP throughout its history. From the courageous individuals who stood up against segregation to the tireless advocates who continue to work towards a more just society, the NAACP has been a catalyst for progress and a voice for the voiceless. As we honor this day, let it serve as a reminder that the fight for equality is ongoing. Let us draw inspiration from the past and channel our collective energy toward creating a future where everyone, regardless of race, can thrive and live free from discrimination. May NAACP Day inspire us to stand united, amplify marginalized voices, and contribute to a world where diversity is celebrated and justice prevails. Together, we can build a future that reflects the principles of equality, opportunity, and unity that the NAACP has championed for decades. Happy NAACP Day! #NAACPDay #EqualRights #JusticeForAll #AdvancingEquality #NAACPAdvocacy #UnityInDiversity #CelebratingJustice #SocialJusticeNow #NAACPStrong #EqualityMatters

This is superb. It’s tempting to assume that there’s a natural balance in the world that will offset the economy’s (read: our) worst instincts. That ubiquitous moral arc, always bending towards justice. The recent implementation of modern slavery legislation in Australia and around the world just makes sense, right? We’ve all seen the photos of kids mining cobalt and the aerial photos of sprawling forced labor camps—the grubby side of this brave, new, AI-informed world. Surely, governments and businesses are just obliged to act? In reality, change seems to be the net impact of a network of people tirelessly working to create good. The timelines are long, the remuneration low, and there is no promise that it will happen. In an age of tech-convenience, withering attention spans, and the drive for security, who’d do it? People like Carolyn Kitto. Congrats on this important moment of recognition whilst on mission! A timely timeline bump to stay the course and work for good. At least for me.
🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 Carolyn Kitto, Co-Director of Be Slavery Free, has been recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the community through social justice initiatives. This honour is a testament to her unwavering dedication and tireless efforts in the fight against modern slavery. Carolyn humbly acknowledges that this honour is not just for her but "for the movement". It is a recognition of the collective effort and relentless commitment of everyone involved in this cause. She invites all of us to continue being part of this vital movement, working together to create a world free from exploitation and slavery. Join us in celebrating this incredible achievement and let's keep pushing forward together! 🙌💪 #beslaveryfree #oam

As a passionate advocate for chess education, my journey began at the age of 14, driven by a vision to introduce the game into schools. Through countless endeavors, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of chess in cultivating essential life skills that transcend the board. Chess isn't merely a game; it's a dynamic classroom where strategic thinking, problem-solving, resilience, and patience are honed. These skills form the bedrock of success not only in chess but also in various aspects of life. From enhancing critical thinking abilities to fostering creativity and decision-making prowess, the impact of chess education is profound and far-reaching. When people ask me how I know chess is working, I tell them the numbers don't lie. The tangible results, reflected in improved academic performance, heightened cognitive abilities, and enhanced social skills, speak volumes about the effectiveness of chess education. What's unfolding in Pittsburgh is more than just a local initiative—it's the inception of a broader movement. Through Queens Gambit, we're pioneering innovative approaches to make chess accessible to all, empowering individuals to unlock their full potential, one move at a time.
