African Wildlife Economy Institute Director, Dr Francis Vorhies has arrived at the 33rd meeting of the CITES Animals Committee in Geneva, Switzerland. On behalf of AWEI, Dr Vorhies will be co-hosting a sure-to-be-engaging side event with Conservation Visions on "Building a Wildlife Economy". With opening remarks from Secretary General of CITES, Ivonne Higuero, and facilitated by Sebastian Winkler, the panel discussion will feature Shane Mahoney, Founder of Conservation Visions, Hesiquio Benitez (TBC), Director of Biodiversity Cooperation and Implementation at CONABIO, Carolina Caceres, Director of International Biodiversity Policy, Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Michael 't Sas-Rolfes, AWEI Research Fellow and CIC Expert on the South African Wildlife Economy. The National Park Foundation is supporting research to better understand the vulnerable Bethany Beach firefly. This research sparked a collaboration between the National Park Service, Delaware State University, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and The Xerces Society. The Bethany Beach firefly is under review to be listed as an endangered species. This research will inform future conservation strategies to protect these magical bugs. For now, you can help save fireflies by limiting your light pollution and planting native flowers. In Utqiaġvik, an exciting initiative led by Iñupiat hunters and researchers is including Indigenous Knowledge in bearded seal conservation efforts. By developing habitat models that incorporate traditional Indigenous Knowledge of seal behavior, they seek to enhance species management practices and support long-term sustainable subsistence use. NSE staff had the pleasure of authoring the Recovery Strategy, prepared under the Endangered Species Act, 2007 for Hudsonian Godwit (a bird found in northern Ontario). Huge shoutout to report authors Grace Pitman, Pauline Catling, Taylor North and Sarah Mainguy, and to our GIS specialists Kristen Pott and Ryan Coady who developed the report mapping. What is a recovery strategy? Under the ESA a recovery strategy provides the best available scientific knowledge on what is required to achieve recovery of a species. A recovery strategy outlines the habitat needs and the threats to the survival and recovery of the species. It also makes recommendations on the objectives for protection and recovery, the approaches to achieve those objectives, and the area that should be considered in the development of a habitat regulation. The Hudsonian Godwit (Limosa haemastica) is a large Nearctic shorebird belonging to the sandpiper family, Scolopacidae, with long legs and a long, slightly upturned bill. In Ontario, the Hudsonian Godwit breeds in wetland habitats, typically wet sedge-tundra meadows. The Hudsonian Godwit is listed as threatened under Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, 2007 (ESA). Read my friend and colleague Marcus R.'s latest paper taking a closer look at the impact of edutainment on North Right Whale conservation efforts! Environmental documentaries are important and popular sources of information for audiences who want to learn about or experience species and ecosystems that they may never experience themselves. But these films are not objective reflections of ecological realities, they are creative works that are designed to share a creative interpretation of those realities. This has implications for conservation and policy outcomes related to the protection of species and their habitats.

A bit on Community Involvement.... Biodiversity loss is a critical concern requiring urgent action. Policymakers need reliable data to develop effective conservation strategies, particularly qualitative data on wildlife ecology, behavior, dynamics, and dispersal capacity. This information is essential for creating plans that ensure the long-term survival of species. Local hunters, with their extensive knowledge of the forest and wildlife, offer informative input. Having lived in the area all their lives, they understand animal behavior and habitats deeply. Their knowledge is essential to informing our conservation efforts. Involving local hunters in the decision-making process ensures that conservation efforts are effective and sustainable. This collaboration benefits both wildlife conservation and the well-being of local communities, helping to protect biodiversity and promote a succeeding ecosystem for future generations. "Documenting the Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale: Policies, Conservation Efforts, and Stakeholders Depicted in 'Entangled' and 'Last of the Right Whales'" is now available in the Journal of International Wildlife Law & Policy. This article is one of the chapters from the my dissertation about #environmentalmedia related to the conservation and management of the critically endangered #rightwhale. 🐋 🎬 Environmental documentaries are important and popular sources of information for audiences who want to learn about or experience species and ecosystems that they may never experience themselves. But these films are not objective reflections of ecological realities, they are creative works that are designed to share a creative interpretation of those realities. This has implications for conservation and policy outcomes related to the protection of species and their habitats. In this article, my co-authors and I critically analyzed the only two documentaries about the North Atlantic right whale, Entangled (2020, David Abel and Andy Laub) and Last of the Right Whales (2021, Nadine Pequeneza). We compared and contrasted the narrative strategies used in each film to construct these incredible animals, the challenges they face, and the human stakeholder groups that will determine their fate. We conclude by discussing the role of documentary film in public engagement and policymaking for conservation more broadly, as well as future opportunities for interdisciplinary research for environmental film.
