1moBeing Puerto Rican, I'd like to contribute to the conversation that we often forget about our indigenous people of the islands. The Taino have made many important contributions to Puerto Rican culture, including the island's unique language. Wrought with words that are clearly rooted in Taino, rather than Spanish history, the language spoken by Puerto Ricans reflects how the native islanders revered and stewarded the natural resources which sustained them. Today, developers are eager to take over this tiny island treasure because they see opportunity to sell easily accessible and relatively inexpensive resort property.
