How do you think about creating a category in the market when it's a huge existing behaviour but not a well-defined category in the industry?
We started True Places to be *the* brand for the modern outdoors because we recognised that millions of people are spending hours every week outdoors in situations like those listed in the article below, from the sidelines of kids sports games to the backyard firepit that represents important and frequent time with friends and family. But existing brands (and the organization of retails stores) are all about the great outdoors, mountaineering and the wilderness. Nothing against those activities (we enjoy them too), but we wanted to create quality products designed specifically for the modern outdoors, where we spend most of our time.
One advantage as a startup primarily selling direct to consumer is exactly that - we have that connection to our customers. We ask everyone after they purchase where and how they use their chairs (we get over 50% response rate!), and I think that's got to be the best data out there on the modern outdoors.
It's going to take time, but we're focused on building the modern outdoors as an important category in the market, reflective of how important it is in people's lives.
We've been counting down the top 10 activities in the modern outdoors based on input from thousands of customers and other feedback from the wider True Places community. Check out the True Places magazine article for the full list.

1moIf you're camping with kids, patrolling the site for garbage and stray items can be their job at sunset, before dark. Once the camp site is broken and packed, the patrolling is the last thing done. They can line up, two arms' length away, and walk through with their eyes on the ground. Not just garbage, but keys, Scout knives, compasses, clips and other stuff turned up. Spotless! My son's Boy Scout troop would do that. The younger Scouts have this job.
