When water utilities are provided the opportunity to upgrade their operational systems, special attention needs to be paid to the cybersecurity impact these improvements may have. While technology and digital transformation will allow water utilities to more efficiently and effectively operate, if not done securely, the vulnerabilities introduced will far outweigh any potential gains. #ruralwater#otcyber#watersecurity

Four weeks post Helene. Zero interest loans are percolating and the State has passed a second (larger) aid bill. We are starting to get a glimpse of what the many months and years of recovery will look like. Slow. We are winding down our EOC. We are consolidating official points of distribution. NFIP inspections continue. We are wading through insurance and FEMA processes public facilities and infrastructure, gutting what we must and figuring out what may need to be demolished. Slow. Debris removal is more complicated than anyone wants to hear. Slow. We do not have potable water. Slow. The traffic in town is - you guessed it. Slow. Temporary office buildings somewhere in the resource request abyss. Slow. The sprint is over and we are at the starting line of the marathon. I have not found my stride. Maybe next week. #helene #localgov #localgovernment #wnc #nc

$5.8B Water Bill Solves a Big Problem The United States faces a daunting challenge with its aging water & stormwater infrastructure, a situation that jeopardizes public health, the environment and economic prosperity. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the nation's drinking water infrastructure scored a "C-" in its 2021 Report Card, indicating a pressing need for upgrades and maintenance. The United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that over $743 billion is required for water infrastructure improvements over the next 20 years to ensure safe water for all Americans. This $5.8B will be used for principal loan forgiveness so it leverages up quite a bit. Still, it's just a drop in the bucket. The implications of inaction are profound, encompassing not only the risk of waterborne diseases and environmental degradation but also economic setbacks due to water scarcity and emergency repairs. Investing in water systems is essential for building resilient communities capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change, including increased frequency of extreme weather events. By prioritizing funding and innovation in infrastructure solutions, the United States can safeguard its water resources, protect public health and ensure economic stability for future generations, making the call for investment in water infrastructure both a necessity and a responsibility. https://loom.ly/6DZLvQk #water #engineering #construction

Financing for future-proofing. KommuneKredit has existed for 125 years. But we are not stuck in the past. On the contrary. Almost all the loans we issue or leasing agreements we enter into help future-proof our society in various ways. This includes, for instance, loans for investments in climate and coastal protection. Such as here at Store Vejle Å in Ishøj. The area was frequently affected by floods, and in 2014, a cross-municipal project was initiated to protect large areas from flooding. The solution was a new pumping station installed at Ishøj Harbor in 2017, which KommuneKredit helped finance.
